Inspired by the love of Jesus, Ashas Refuge restores hope, dignity, and confidence by providing trauma-informed immigration support, education, crisis-response services, and job-skills training through apprenticeship opportunities for displaced individuals and families.
We work to fill the gaps experienced by the most disadvantaged or vulnerable refugees as they work toward successful resettlement. This is the driving force behind Ashas Refuge. We offer help and encouragement for individuals facing an array of challenges by first just loving them. We aim to serve those refugees who have an illness or disability, are uneducated adults, parents of multiple children, single parents, preschoolers in need of kindergarten readiness and the elderly, particularly widows and widowers. We believe all people have a right to learn basic skills to live an independent and productive life of respect through Gods love.

| General Refugee Assistance: Family Services provides a wide range of refugee assistance such as mentoring to new mothers, transportation to appointments, help with navigating the medical systems, educational services, health insurance, and other community services, job search, application process, and interview support, assistance locating and obtaining housing, home ownership training and assistance purchasing a home and any other assistance clients may need. In 2020 we served 446 clients in our Family Services Department. Immigration Services presents a low-cost way for refugees and asylees to meet their ongoing requirements for immigration documents to be submitted to US Immigration Services. We provide this service through a partnership with Community Legal Center, whose attorneys meet with clients and prepare their documents, then submit applications on behalf of the client. Asha's Refuge assists the attorneys by helping clients organize the information required by attorneys, and by providing Civil Surgeons to perform required exams. These services enable families and individuals to save hundreds of dollars in legal fees and medical exam expenses while meeting their reporting requirement timely and accurately. In 2020 Asha's Refuge assisted 750 clients in this department. | $85,160 | - |
| The Next Generation program is designed for young adults with an interrupted education who are too old for high school, but need a high school diploma, American life and job skills to advance in life, as well as teens who are preparing for college. Participants with an interrupted education are offered a unique opportunity to obtain a high school diploma, and prepare to reach their goals of college, employment or trade school. The program also provides leadership training to empower students to share their knowledge, skills and connections with their communities. Various aspects of the program are also available to High School age students who are in need of additional encouragement and tutoring to succeed with their diploma goals. The program empowers young adults through education and basic life skills which we believe will have a far-reaching impact on the refugee community by improving families economic status and demonstrating the value of education to future success for their children. Clients are given the tools, tutoring and mentorship needed to achieve their goals of obtaining their high school diploma, a path to a driver's license, better grammar and English comprehension, English reading, speaking and writing confidence, good resume and job search abilities, basic computer skills, financial literacy, and assistance in applying for and enrolling in college. The program supports counseling for those that may have a need. Clients are additionally encouraged to engage in community service projects where they will speak and serve which helps to build their confidence, promotes cultural understanding and bridges the gap of common misunderstandings about newcomers. Five students last year graduated, but three students this year successfully completed our high school diploma program despite the many health obstacles. They were celebrated with a small graduation ceremony. 20 other high school age and young adults were assisted through this program. | $34,085 | - |
| Our Education Department emphasized small group or individual tutoring during 2020, meeting specific client life skill needs for understanding bill payment, money, time management, cultural understanding, apartment living, healthy habits, calendar, driving, computers, and other life skills necessary for successful resettlement in America, in the context of conversational English. We served 72 clients in this department during 2020. The number was significantly decreased as we paused large classes to meet COVID health requirements. | $27,515 | - |
