“Warren huff, executive director, is the father of holly bruland. Holly bruland is a member of the board of trustees and director of operations.”
“The board of trustees have all reviewed the cedars camps financials at their annual meeting in november. The information there is essentially what is in the 990 report. The committees within the board have reviewed other questions in the 990. The executive director and other key employees have reviewed the 990 report. The 990 report is a vailable to the board of trustees.”
“The executive committee of the board of trustees reviewed other executive director positions within the american camp associatin as well as all the jobs the cedars executive director accomplishes and the number of years serving the organization and recommended the salary to the board of trustees who votes on the decision. The executive committee also reviewed similar positions within the american camp association and determined other salaries of key employees due to familial connections whi h the board of trustees determined and voted on.”
“The cedars camps provides this information upon request. By its incorporation as a not for profit corporation in the state of missouri, the by-laws of the cedars camps are public knowledge and its 990 document is available at the federal level for public review.”
“The cedars camps received an unusual grant of $983,180 due to the pandemic which helped us to purchase ppe equipment, put 40 hand-washing stations throughout the camp, purchase and install commercial fans that met the ventilation covid protocols for 22 cabins and 4 facilities, purchase and install hand sanitizers throughout the camp, purchase dining tables to meet protocols for social distancing while eating, purchase and install plastic sneeze guards for food service protocols. This unusual grant also helped to cover counselor salaries since we were not able to bring campers onsite for summer 2020 due to the covid pandemic. We did bring staff to camp for activity certifications and workshops which included protocol training due to the pandemic. We fully expected to bring in campers, but soon determined this was not possible. We did go to an online zoom camp and trained counselors for this. We were able to keep staff at camp for the rest of the summer with a combination of online zoom camp and staff support to close down activity areas and camper cabins early at the end of the summer since all our fall events were cancelled. Due to this unusual grant because of the pandemic and ppp loan, cedars was able to pay the staff their contracted amount for the summer. The cedars camps received a donation to build a needed residence onsite to house our property manager and housekeeping director who were living off camp. It is such a blessing to have them located at camp now. We received a donation to build two cabins for our youngest campers. They are all weather and one of them has an underground storm shelter which is needed to be in conformity to the american camp association guidelines. All of these donations increased our normal revenue.”
“Salaries for program service go to summer college counselors, seasonal workers and 10 year round employees that provide care for our herd of 75 horses, activity upkeep and maintaining the 1000 acres of property which includes facilities, grounds, and equipment. Due to the pandemic this summer was not a normal one of 9 weeks of youth camping, 1 week and an extra long weekend for family and adult camping, and fall retreats and bible study programs. Instead, during summer 2020 we were not able to bring campers to onsite camp and our fall programs were cancelled. We did bring in staff once missouri went to phase 2. We had 3 weeks of staff activity certifications, covid protocols training, and staff workshops. Staff were certified to be red cross life guards, camp horse association instructors to teach horseback riding, ski boat driving instruction, cable ski instruction, and zip line instruction. We could not certify staff on our high ropes course due to all the covid regulations. After 3 weeks of pre-camp training, we realized that we were not ready to safely bring in campers to cedars. Instead the staff were trained to provide online zoom camp in their activity areas. We were grateful to be able to keep the staff at camp and pay them. We did receive a ppp loan to help with this as well as donations. We felt that it was so important to have these staff trained and ready to go for summer 2020 and that it was necessary for this training to be ready for summer 2021.”
“Due to covid we had to cancel all our onsite summer and fall programs. We offered zoom camp where activities were shown and taught to campers. We sent out program care packages to go along with zoom camp which included crafts items, maker faire kits for those who chose that program, summer theme t-shirt, stickers, and cards that went along with our summer inspirational theme. Offerings for online camp included: main camp, middle school camp, high school camp, maker faire camp, riding camp, musical theater camp. Program expenses also included the training that staff needed to be certified in activities. This included diversity and inclusion training which was so important to the staff. Maintaining our herd of 75 horses year round included growing hay and buying grain to feed them, health care with farriers and vets, maintaining tack, and training the staff through camp based clinics with the certified horsemanship association (cha).”
“Maintenance includes upkeep for our program support buildings which includes 24 cabins with bathrooms, 4 individual residences/homes, 4 staff housing facilities, 2 lodges with kitchens and dining rooms, a care facility, sports center, and heavy and small equipment. There are 1000 acres of property to maintain including fencing to keep our herd of horses in and neighboring cattle out, aquatic center with a jr. Olympic lap pool and diving well, waterslide, soccer fields, trails for horseback riding, 2 covered arenas (1 large), 2 corrals, 8 riding arenas, 1 tennis court, basketball court, and an outdoor covered chapel. The facilities support the activities and cedars purpose/mission. We also have a program for high school campers to work on the grounds crew and in food service training in these areas to see the bigger picture of what it takes to run camp and prepare them for counseling in future years. During this fiscal year, outdoor hand washing stations were put throughout the camp, commercial fans with proper ventilation were installed in every cabin, chapel, and lodges, ppe equipment was purchased in large quantities and utilized according to protocaols, had sanitation stations were placed throughout the camp, some fencing was replaced or upgraded, scale blasters were placed in 8 facilities, the main kitchen had wire shelving replaced, a fire suppression hood was installed, hot water lines were replaced with pex, a cabin was rewired with new conduit-protected wiring.”
“Promoting character building, outdoor education and spiritual growth as well as teamwork and individual growth. These activities include: bible lesson study, horsebaack riding, red cross swimming classes, crafts, archery, canoeing, nature study, sports, rope courses, zipline, climbing wall, drama, msical theater, waterskiing, family camping, bible workshops. Cedars camps strive to be able to make camp possible to anyone that needs financial aid in order to attend. Due to the pandemic, we did bring in our staff to certify in activities and train in workshops to prepare for all the regulations to follow from the american camp association (aca) which we are a member, the cdc, and the local health department. This happened when missouri went to phase 2. We were preparing to bring in campers and had prepared the camp with hand washing stations throughout the camp, commercial fans in all cabins with proper air ventilation, ppe products, continuous sanitizing, compliance with food service protocols. We soon realized that we were not ready to have campers and all our residential sessions were cancelled as well as all our fall programs. We did offer zoom online camp and prepared the staff for this.”
“Since we could not bring in residential campers due to the regulations required for the pandemic, we went to online zoom camp for the summer and continued this into september.”
“Due to the pandemic we could not bring residential campers to camp. Even though we prepared to bring them and did bring in our staff for pre-camp training, activity certifications, and regulartions due to covid, we soon realized that we needed to cancel all onsite programs and offer online camp. We were grateful that through donations and a ppp loan, we were able to retain the staff and pay them. Tuition from online camp was less than 10% of what a normal summer tuition brings. We are preparing to bring residential campers to cedars for summer 2021 and learned a lot about applying the pandemic guidelines during summer 2020 with the staff.”
“We had no unrelated business gross income.”
“We do not have an indoor tanning service.”
“Land, building, and equipment at cost is up this due to a new residence onsite, two new all weather cabins, commercial fans in all of our 22 cabins and 4 facilities, expansion of offices in our main lodge, a new two-horse trailer, new database, electronic front gate with surveilance camera, an upgraded ski boat, and an upgraded waste water treatment system for the girls camp. We have received donations for these needed and functional purchases.”
“Part v line 4: the cedars camps is allowed to take out an endowment distribution once a year as needed of 4.5% of the average of the total of the past 3 years for camperships, maintenance and operations.”

THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: BIBLE LESSON STUDY, HORSEBACK RIDING, RED CROSS SWIMMING CLASSES, CRAFTS, ARCHERY, CANOEING, NATURE STUDY, SPORTS, ROPES COURSES, ZIPLINE, CLIMBING WALL, DRAMA, MUSICAL THEATER, AND WATERSKIING, PART III SECTION A LINE 2: THE CEDARS CAMPS RECEIVED AN UNUSUAL GRANT OF $983,180 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, WHICH HELPED US TO PURCHASE PPE EQUIPMENT, PUT 40 HAND-WASHING STATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CAMP, PURCHASED AND INSTALL COMMERCIAL FANS THAT MET THE VENTILATION COVID PROTOCOLS FOR 22 CABINS AND 4 FACILITIES, PURCHASE AND INSTALL HAND SANITIZERS THROUGHOUT THE CAMP, PURCHASE DINING TABLES TO MEET PROTOCOLS FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING WHILE EATING, PURCHASE AND INSTALL PLASTIC SNEEZE GUARDS FOR FOOD SERVICE PROTOCOLS. THIS UNUSUAL GRANT ALSO HELPED TO COVER COUNSELOR SALARIES SINCE WE WERE NOT ABLE TO BRING CAMPERS ONSITE FOR SUMMER 2020 DUE TO THE COVID PANDEMIC. WE DID BRING STAFF TO CAMP FOR ACTIVITY CERTIFICATIONS AND WORKSHOPS WHICH INCLUDED TRAINING OF THE PROTOCOLS DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. WE FULLY EXPECTED TO BRING IN CAMPERS BUT SOON DETERMINED THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE. WE DID GO TO AN ONLINE ZOOM CAMP AND TRAINED COUNSELORS FOR THIS. WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP STAFF AT CAMP FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER WITH A COMBINATION OF ONLINE ZOOM CAMP AND STAFF SUPPORT TO CLOSE DOWN ACTIVITY AREAS AND CAMPER CABINS EARLIER THAN USUAL AT THE END OF THE SUMMER SINCE ALL OUR FALL EVENTS WERE CANCELLED. DUE TO THIS UNUSUAL GRANT BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND A PPP LOAN, CEDARS WAS ABLE TO PAY THE STAFF THEIR CONTRACTED AMOUNT FOR THE SUMMER. ALSO OUR TUITION FOR OUR FISCAL YEAR OF 10/01/2018 TO 9/30/2019 WAS $573,354, BUT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC OUR TUIRION FOR 10/01/2019 TO 9/30/2020 WAS $84, 182 SINCE WE COULD NOT HAVE ONSITE RESIDENTIAL CAMPERS FOR OUR REGULAR SESSIONS OR OUR TWO FAMILY CAMP PROGRAMS OR OUR FALL PROGRAMS. |

WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP STAFF AT CAMP FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER WITH A COMBINATIONS OF ONLINE ZOOM CAMP AND STAFF SUPPORT TO CLOSE DOWN ACTIVITY AREAS AND CAMPER CABINS EARLIER THAN USUAL AT THE END OF THE SUMMER SINCE ALL OUR FALL EVENTS WERE CANCELLED. DUE TO THIS UNUSUAL GRANT BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND A PPP LOAN, CEDARS WAS ABLE TO PAY THE STAFF THEIR CONTRACTED AMOUNT FOR THE SUMMER. ALSO OUR TUITION FOR OUR FISCAL YEAR OF 10/1/2018 TO 9/30/2019 WAS $573,354, BUT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC OUR TUITION FOR 10/1/2019 TO 9/30/2020 WAS $84,182 SINCE WE COULD NOT HAVE ONSITE RESIDENTIAL CAMPERS FOR OUR REGULAR SESSIONS OR OUR TWO FAMILY CAMP PROGRAMS OR OUR FALL PROGRAMS. |
