“Lalmba is striving to end generations of extreme poverty in rural east africa by addressing the four basic needs for people and communities to thrive: access to education, health care, economic opportunity, and nutrition. Lalmba tackles these objectives by giving priority attention to the most vulnerable of citizens - the poor, the children, and the marginalized. We prioritize at-risk children and ensure they receive an education, health care, and have a place to call home. We see a future where today's children are tomorrow's leaders. At our health care facilities in ethiopia and kenya, we save lives on a daily basis, and we educate communities about disease prevention to achieve healthier, more self-reliant communities. Our microloan programs provide small business loans to entrepreneures and to orphans' guardians, sparking economic growth and introducing business opportunities for the extremely poor, who traditionally have no options.”
“Primary health care lalmba runs static health care facilities in rural kenya and ethiopia, where we provide high quality care for the poor. We believe that successful development in poor communities requires a healthy population with access to modern health care. In kenya, we operate the matoso clinic, serving a catchment population of about 50,000 people, and the ochuna dispensary, serving a catchment population of about 20,000 people. In 2017, we treated 12,950 outpatients in matoso, and 7,315 outpatients in ochuna. Hiv has done great damage to the family structure in these communities, leaving behind orphaned children and elderly parents with no one to care for them in their declining years. We change this dynamic through intensive hiv counseling, education, and treatment for those who test positive. In 2017, 6,730 people were tested and counseled on hiv prevention. 564 people are receiving anti-retroviral therapy. In ethiopia, we operate the chiri health center, serving a catchment population of 50,000 people, and the agara bushi primary clinic (abpc), serving a catchment population of 15,000 people. In 2017, we treated 29,657 people at the chiri health center, and 2,109 people at abpc. We have a 15-bed hospital ward where we provided 24-hour intensive treatment to 328 critcally ill patients, saving and discharging 319 of them. 82 of our inpatients were severely malnourished children, who required 3-4 weeks of intesive care. They would have died without it. Hiv rates in ethiopia are traditionally low but on the rise. Our teams of nurses and public health educators have received additional training to address this major issue. In 2017, we tested and counseled 2,300 patients at the chiri health center. Currently, we have 57 hiv+ patients receiving art and continual therapy. Public health care in kenya and ethiopia, our public health programs aim to prevent disease before it starts. Here is where the long-term battle for health is won. A diagnosis of malaria can mean weeks in bed for a child or parent, for example. A person who stays healthy won't need those weeks away from work or school, improving their financial and educational potential. Intensive health education tailored to the cultural needs, the most prevalent health issues, and the learning abilities of the people we serve is a goal of this program. Early intervention in the form of prenatal care, well-baby checks, and immunizations makes up the other part of our public health program. In kenya, 3,848 people were touched by our ph team in 2017. Mobile clinics traveled to remote communities two times each week to provide education, immunizations, and mother/child health care. Education topics included hiv/aids prevention, transmission and treatment, hygiene, malaria prevention, clean water, and nutrition. In ethiopia, our public health team provided education to 11,783 people. This team utilizes creative ways to teach a largely uneducated population. They built a portable stage and created a series of dramas utilizing props and costumes to teach relevant health topics, such as mother/child health, epi, nutrition, communicable diseases, environmental and water sanitation, tb, hiv/aids, and public safety. The ethiopia team is also an invaluable partner to government health workers, providing strategic support to inexperienced professionals who are furthest from established health sites. Children at risk in 2017, lalmba provided for the basic needs of 1,127 at-risk children who live with guardians in the community. In kenya, 952 primary school children received school supplies, uniforms, books, school fees, health care, and supplemental nutrition to ensure good health and a quality education. An additional 82 students received scholarships to attend secondary school and vocational training. The large number of orphans requiring care in kenya is due to the aids epidemic which caused mass deaths in their parents' generation. Three years ago, we introduced a new microloan p”
“The people that make lalmba a success in the u.s. - we have one very dedicated part-time volunteer who works to log our donations and ensures that our friends are thanked for their generous financial support. - we have two volunteer medical directors, who embrace our mission and are dedicated to service. They advise on how to meet all of our health care goals and visit projects annually to ensure we provide the highest care possible with our limited resources. - because of these volunteers and their dedication, hillary and jeff, lalmba's only employees, can put more energy into directing lalmba's vision and mission, strategic planning and capacity building, recruiting volunteers, and keeping the organization financially healthy through robust fundraising efforts that plainly tell the stories of the people we serve. In africa lalmba's programs are run by nearly 100 african staff and 3-6 expatriate volunteers who are specialists in medicine, public health, financial management, and program development. In 2017, 4 expats from 3 different countries served as expert volunteers, mentoring our african staff and ensuring that our program goals are met. Our african staff serve in many professional and support roles. Our leaders in kenya are marico osiyo (project director) and jenifer atieno (children's director), and our leaders in ethiopia are tafesse alemu (general manger), desalegn nedi (ethiopian medical director), and aselefech terefe (children's director). We also have cleaners, drivers, guards, nurses, groundskeepers, health officers, housemothers who care for the orphans, and administrators. All of these people are vital to our operations. We also have many african volunteers who spend several hours each month on oversight committees, teaching in their villages, monitoring and mentoring microloan recipients, or visiting hiv patients or the elderly in their homes between clinic appointments.”

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | LALMBA IS STRIVING TO END GENERATIONS OF EXTREME POVERTY IN RURAL EAST AFRICA BY ADDRESSING THE FOUR BASIC NEEDS FOR PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES TO THRIVE: ACCESS TO EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE, ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, AND NUTRITION. OUR MICROLOAN PROGRAMS PROVIDE SMALL BUSINESS LOANS TO ENTREPRENEURES AND TO ORPHANS' GUARDIANS, SPARKING ECONOMIC GROWTH AND INTRODUCING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE EXTREMELY POOR, WHO TRADITIONALLY HAVE NO OPTIONS. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | PRIMARY HEALTH CARE LALMBA RUNS STATIC HEALTH CARE FACILITIES IN RURAL KENYA AND ETHIOPIA, WHERE WE PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY CARE FOR THE POOR. THREE YEARS AGO, WE INTRODUCED A NEW MICROLOAN P |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 2 | THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE LALMBA A SUCCESS IN THE U.S. WE ALSO HAVE MANY AFRICAN VOLUNTEERS WHO SPEND SEVERAL HOURS EACH MONTH ON OVERSIGHT COMMITTEES, TEACHING IN THEIR VILLAGES, MONITORING AND MENTORING MICROLOAN RECIPIENTS, OR VISITING HIV PATIENTS OR THE ELDERLY IN THEIR HOMES BETWEEN CLINIC APPOINTMENTS. |
