DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Puppetry Arts Institute's mission is to preserve and promote puppetry through education and entertainment for all ages. PAI is a 501(c)3 organization with a board of directors, who meet six times a year to oversee the Institute. PAI is located in a 3,000 square foot handicapped -accessible building in the Englewood business area of Independence, MO. Englewood has been designated as the "Arts & Entertainment District" of Independence by the City Council. This is our sixteenth year. The Institute includes the Hazelle Rollins Puppet Museum. Hazelle Rollins was a Kansas City business woman, who started a puppet production factory in 1934. The company made millions of puppets and became the largest puppet factory in the world. PAI has the remaining inventory of this factory and uses the parts (especially vinyl heads) to do workshops with children and adults. The Institute also includes workshop space which is turned into a theater space for puppet shows. A puppet research library, gift shop and offices complete the facility. We maintain a web site, www.hazelle.org, Facebook page, a quarterly newsletter, mailing list, email and press release lists for publicity, monthly postings on various web sites featuring events for families and monthly free advertising in the Independence City Scene and local newspaper, The Examiner. Monthly puppet shows are scheduled, bringing in local and out-of-state puppeteers using a variety of styles of puppetry. We bring in a puppeteer of national reputation for one show a year that is for older children and adults, to increase the understanding of the wide range of the art of puppetry. Puppet making workshops are scheduled with at-risk youth, school children, day care groups, home school groups, seniors, the mentally and physically challenged and family and youth groups. All 1,450 kindergarten children in the Independence School District come to PAI to paint their own puppets and see a show about kindness in the classroom. All of the activities are reasonably priced and no one is turned away because of inability to pay. Two of our puppeteers perform off site at various locations when requested. We seek grants and donors to sponsor shows and workshops. We have a room in our museum devoted to Hazelle Rollins and her Puppet Factory, as well as a room devoted to "Puppets from Around the World" with 20 countries represented. We have a designated area for changing exhibits on various themes. Our Artistic Director designs our window displays monthly and our changing exhibit area bi-annually. Two years ago we were showcased on PBS Arts Upload for a 12 minute segment. The life of Hazelle Rollins was portrayed in the December 2016 edition of Missouri Life magazine along with a description of our facility. We were featured March 14, 2017 on Better KC television program on Channel 5. They filmed their entire show on our site. In addition, Joel Nichols from KC Live came to PAI to host a show on our site in June 2017. We are also the world producers of Nunsense Puppets used in the 9 different Nunsense productions. We have shipped puppets all over the United States and to such foreign destinations as Germany, England, Australia, Hong Kong, Sweden, and most recently Lithuania and Nova Scotia.$0$28,232
