“The kansas city biosecure manufacturing tech hub (kc biohub) serves as a backbone organization for the region's biologics and biomanufacturing cluster, and our activities are designed to meet the needs of industry, entrepreneurs, and our community. One of 31 tech hubs designated by the u.s. Department of commerce's economic development administration (eda), kc biohub has been endorsed by the federal government as an ecosystem with the potential to achieve global industry leadership within ten years.”
“1. Advancing the kc region's life sciences ecosystem: "path to 2025" nearly a decade ago, bionexus kc collaborated with stakeholders, deloitte, and the community to develop a 10-year strategic plan called the path to 2025, identifying key life sciences opportunities and foundational elements necessary for regional growth. The path to 2025, still relevant today, guides bionexus kc and the region in the work we collectively prioritize and advance and, in 2024, bionexus kc led regional efforts convening stakeholders around key collaborative opportunities. The kc biohub focused on growing the biomanufacturing capacity of large molecules and biologics that are vital to animal health, cancer research and treatment, neuroscience, rare diseases, autoimmune diseases, and prevention of infectious diseases. This initiative elevated the region and bionexus kc to national prominence, increasing global awareness of the area's scientific contributions. As a result, bionexus kc and the kc region hosted several federal delegations in 2024, including biomedical advanced research and development authority (barda), the economic development administration (eda), the national security commission on emerging biotechnology (nsceb), and several congressional delegations to feature our regional assets and build connected relationships to our stakeholders. Digital health kc marked a major milestone on the path to 2025. Long identified as a key regional strength and opportunity, digital health has become one of our area's most robust industries. The ecosystem includes 125+ digital health companies and connects investors, entrepreneurs, healthcare leaders, and community members around technology-driven health improvement efforts. Collaboration continues to tie all our work together. We advanced capital: bringing more investors to the table, educating investors on life sciences opportunities, and helping entrepreneurs navigate angel and venture funding processes. To address the talent needs of the region, we launched the biotech for mo training program in partnership with full employment council and metropolitan community college. Through collective efforts, bionexus kc and the region will fill in the gaps in the life sciences ecosystem, drive significant growth, and share the story of a thriving ecosystem. 2. Digital health kc and digital health day in 2024, digital health kc made considerable strides in our mission of supporting early-stage digital health companies and fostering innovation in the kansas city region. At the center of health + data, digital health kc is advancing the region's digital health cluster through meaningful collaborations and strategic partnerships. More than just an organization, digital health kc represents a community-powered initiative that unites crucial partners including the university of missouri-kansas city innovation center, kc digital drive, and pipeline entrepreneurs to nurture and elevate local talent. Digital health kc has served as a powerful catalyst for innovation, transforming previously disconnected companies into a cohesive ecosystem of innovators aligned toward economic growth. Our community engagement efforts have been significant, creating intentional connections that spark collaboration. Networking events provide opportunities to celebrate wins, share future plans, and build regional connections, while healthcare 201 sessions offer expert-led education on relevant digital health topics. Through these initiatives, digital health kc has established meaningful relationships with startups, investors, digital health companies, and industry partners. These gatherings have fostered new partnerships and have accelerated knowledge sharing across the digital health community in kansas city. The impact of digital health kc extends beyond networking, as we've successfully connected early-stage companies with funding opportunities, provided personalized guidance on business strategies and product-market fit, and facili”
“4. Workforce development with the recent designation as a u.s. Tech hub, kansas city is undergoing a transformational expansion in its biomanufacturing and biotechnology sector. The kc region has the largest concentration of animal health and nutrition companies in the world and now aims to strengthen these resources to increase drug discovery innovation and production of biologics for both animals and humans. Growth of the biotech sector will create a surging demand for stable, high-paying jobs with upward mobility. These jobs will require diverse levels of technical skills and scientific knowledge acquired through either degree programs or non-degree workforce training programs. In direct response to this growing demand, bionexus kc and kc biohub are coordinating with regional bioscience companies, research institutions, and public workforce systems to formulate strategic workforce development programs that are both industry- responsive and adaptive to community challenges. The bioscience industry occupational training and equity collaborative hub for missouri (biotech for mo) is a statewide program delivering training for high- demand technical skills necessary for laboratory technician roles that do not require a degree. Using allocated arpa funds (missouri ded workforce development training grant through biostl), bionexus kc spearheaded the development of career-launching, short-term technical training courses to be delivered in kansas city. Unique to these courses is an embedded opportunity for trainees to qualify for industry recognized credentials through the bioscience core skills institute, develop career readiness skills through the full employment council, and gain first-hand experience of training on a college campus at metropolitan community college. Additionally, industry access to talent will improve through direct trainee networking, helping companies fill jobs faster. 5. Research and development grants research development grants represent one of bionexus kc's oldest and most popular programs. Grants are awarded to generate preliminary data that support submission of major multidisciplinary research proposals to government or private funding agencies. Applicants receive written peer reviews, regardless of whether their project received funding, to help them improve future grant applications. This program is highly valued by our stakeholders. From 2002 to 2024, the bionexus kc program managed 165 grants that awarded over $10 million in research funding, supporting groundbreaking scientific initiatives throughout the region. Historically, for every $1 invested in grants, $13.10 has been returned to the region's scientists and community in external funding. 6. Science2art science2art transforms complex research into visually compelling works of art. This unique program gives regional scientists a platform to share their discoveries through visual storytelling, making their work more accessible and engaging to the public. Each piece represents a personal research journey, created in collaboration with the scientists and their teams. Proceeds from the auctioned artwork directly support steam education initiatives across our region. 7. Bionexus kc annual event our 2024 bionexus kc annual event celebrated homegrown innovation and the collective impact of our region, bringing together 500+ leaders, researchers, students, and innovators at the midland.
