FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

2019 updates: 1. Selection of new president & ceo 2. 2018 life sciences industry census 3. Regional life sciences strategic assessment "path to 2025" 4. Collaborate2cure 5. Kansas city quality and value innovation consortium 6. Workforce development 7. Research development grant programs 8. Annual dinner and "science to art" auction 9. One health research symposium 10. One health day 11. Bioinformatics 1. Bionexus kc announces dennis ridenour as president & ceo bionexus kc announced dennis ridenour as the next president & ceo, effective february 18, 2019. Dennis previously served as the president & ceo of biokansas and was a researcher at the stowers institute for medical research prior to that position. He brings a deep appreciation of the nexus of human and animal health, and an established regional network. Dennis is well-respected for his leadership of biokansas, where he successfully turned around the non-profit, expanding its regional impact through networking, advocacy and the addition of workforce development programs. 2. 2018 life sciences industry census the 2018 life science industry census was conducted in 2018 and the report released in early 2019. The life sciences industry census is the only repeated systematic assessment of industry assets in the region. Additionally, the census collects workforce data providing important information regarding industry workforce needs. Companies included in the study are engaged in research and development or directly support research and development activities within the life sciences. The census defines life sciences as any research activities related to the biology and/or chemistry of animals, humans or plants. Bionexus kc has partnered with investment resources since 2006 to conduct the census project every three years. By using a consistent data collection methodology, each new census adds a level of depth to the information previously gathered and allows for appropriate analysis and comparison of data sets. Essentially each individual census is a chapter in the history of the regional life sciences industry. The census is available at https://bionexuskc.org/reports/. 3. Regional life sciences strategic assessment: "path to 2025" bionexus kc engaged deloitte to execute a strategic assessment of the regional life sciences in 2015. The process was led by an experienced steering committee comprised of community and business leaders in the life sciences. The committee looked at both regional scientific strengths and key drivers of cluster enhancement. The regional vision developed through the assessment process states, "the kansas city region is a global leader at the nexus of human and animal health benefiting all our citizens and the economy." these nexus opportunities will be different for each strategic area and will likely range from using naturally occurring cancer in dogs for accelerating human discoveries to advancing our strength in health it and outcomes research. In 2019, bionexus kc continued to act on the path to 2025, leading programs where appropriate, catalyzing relationships and opportunities, and stimulating collaboration to help bring emerging technologies from concept to reality. 4. Collaborate2cure bionexus kc created the collaborate2cure (c2c) program in 2016 with the goal of stimulating regional scientific collaboration and developing innovative ways to solve scientific challenges. The program provides a platform for collaboration, allowing scientists in the kc region to share their research and to better compete for research funding. Bionexus kc identifies a topic with significant interest to researchers which aligns well with regional expertise, and then coordinates a series of presentations from researchers over the course of several months. In 2019 bionexus kc continued the c2c series focused on "value-based healthcare and quality outcomes", co-chaired by drs. Stacy farr (umkc) carole decker (saint luke's mid america heart institute) and john spertus

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

A key recommendation from the life sciences talent to industry exchange (tie) process, conducted as part of kc rising, was to establish a regional advisory council (rac). The rac can assess a variety of workforce issues and identify education solutions more rapidly, efficiently, and meeting industry needs. - bioinformatics was selected as the first focus area for the rac, as companies in this industry sector struggle to acquire adequately skilled workers. The rac is co-chaired by barbara bichelmeyer (provost, umkc) and harlen hays (manager, lead analytics adviser, cerner). The first meeting included representatives from the bioinformatics industry, k-12 education, higher education, the public workforce system, and education intermediaries. Topics such as the purpose of the rac, a logic model guiding the rac's work, and examples of on-demand curricula created with industry input were discussed. The group works closely with cerner, netsmart, and iqvia companies employing 80% of the bioinformatics workforce. - contract research organizations will be the second focus area. Given the ever-changing nature of their workflow, this industry sector is ripe for using stackable credentials to meet training needs. These short-term credentials can be "stacked," leading to two and four-year degrees. 7. Bionexus kc's research development grant programs bionexus kc's research development grants program is designed to generate preliminary data that support submission of major multidisciplinary research proposals to government or private funding agencies. Applicants receive written peer reviews, regardless of whether their project received funding, to help them improve future grant applications. This is a valued service appreciated by all ten stakeholders. The bionexus kc grant program has awarded 108 grants totaling $5 million since the program launched in 2002. The intent of the grant program is to better position researchers to compete for larger federal grants. For every grant dollar awarded by bionexus kc, $11.70 returns to the region in from federal agencies. The total return on investment currently stands at $58.9 m and it continues to grow. The 2019 bionexus kc research development grant portfolio includes: the blue kc "transforming kc health research grant" (formerly outcomes research) program: since 2012, blue cross blue shield of kansas city (blue kc) has given over $1 million to health outcomes research funding through the bionexus kc outcomes research grant program. The 2019 transforming kc health research grant focused on partnerships that aimed to address socioeconomic and environmental barriers to health, specifically through research on improving access to nutritious foods in nutritionally insecure communities, and was awarded to the partnership between the community health council of wyandotte county (chc), the university of kansas medical center research institute (kumc) and vibrant health. The research will not only identify successful strategies to ensure members have sustainable access to healthy food and the capacity for health food preparation, but also demonstrate associated improvements in health outcomes. The partnership will receive up to $400,000 over two years. Paul patton charitable trust grants: this grant program focuses on genetic diseases mainly affecting children. The funds for this program are provided by the paul patton trust, ted c. Mccarter, william evans jr. And bank of america, n.a., trustee. Bionexus kc awarded grants of up to $50,000 to three researchers, two at the university of kansas medical center and one at children's mercy. Nexus of human and animal health grants: this grant program focuses on biomedical research projects, ranging from using naturally occurring diseases in animals as a model for assessing human drug efficacy to repurposing human drugs for use in animal diseases. In 2019, funded by the hall family foundation, bionexus kc awarded $50,000 grants to two researchers, one at the univer
