Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The board designated endowment is to be used to secure, strengthen, and extend the organization's mission by receiving gifts, bequests, and other conveyances, where the intent of the donor is to make a lasting contribution to the organization. Funds are to not to be used for operating or expenses ordinarily included in the annual budget unless otherwise specified by the board of directors.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization constitutes a qualified not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is, therefore, exempt from federal income taxes. The organization has evaluated its tax positions, expiring statutes of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law and new authoritative rulings and believes that no provision for income taxes is necessary, at this time, to cover any uncertain tax positions.

IRS990/Desc0THE READY READERS PROGRAM SERVES SITES/SCHOOLS WHERE AT LEAST 70% OF THEIR STUDENTS/FAMILIES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH BENEFITS. IN 2020-21, READY READERS ENGAGED MORE THAN 11,800 CHILDREN IN 867 CLASSROOMS IN STORYTIMES, PEN PAL ACTIVITIES, AND OTHER EARLY LITERACY PROGRAMMING DESIGNED TO BUILD AND STRENGTHEN EARLY LITERACY FOUNDATIONS, ENGAGE CHILDREN IN VALUABLE DISCUSSION EXPERIENCES, AND DEVELOP STRONG, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH TRAUMA-INFORMED ADULTS. (SEE SCH O FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION)WE TRAINED AND SUPPORTED 200+ VOLUNTEER READERS WHO CONNECTED WITH EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTERS AND SCHOOLS IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE ST. LOUIS METRO REGION--DISTRIBUTING 95,000+ HIGH-QUALITY, NEW BOOKS TO CHILDREN AND TEACHERS ANNUALLY.DURING THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR, THE INEQUITIES OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM WERE MORE OBVIOUS THAN EVER BEFORE. READY READERS FOUND NEW WAYS TO MEET THE NEEDS IN OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH: EXPANDING OUR DELIVERY MODELS: TO ALLOW GREATER FLEXIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION IN THE READY READERS PROGRAM, CLASSROOMS CHOSE THEIR LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT. WE OFFERED WEEKLY STORYTIMES, PEN PAL ACTIVITIES, CLASSROOM LITERACY SUPPORTS, FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITIES, AND OTHER PROGRAMMING - AND ALL CHILDREN AND CLASSROOMS STILL RECEIVED 7-8 NEW BOOKS DURING THE YEAR. CREATING NEW PARTNERSHIPS: MOVING BEYOND EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSROOMS, READY READERS EXPANDED OUR CONNECTIONS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO WERE SERVING FAMILIES - SUCH AS HOMELESS SHELTERS, FOOD BANKS, FOOD PANTRIES, AND HOME-VISIT PROVIDERS. PROVIDING ADDITIONAL READING SUPPORTS: READING IS ABOUT MORE THAN BOOKS, SO WE PROVIDED ADDITIONAL LITERACY TOOLS TO CHILDREN AND CLASSROOMS THIS YEAR. FOR CHILDREN, WE PROVIDED 500 HOME ACTIVITY KITS, INCLUDING BOOKS, CRAYONS, SCISSORS, GLUE, AND ACTIVITY IDEAS CONNECTED TO THE BOOK. FOR CLASSROOMS, WE PROVIDED CLASSROOM CARE KITS THAT INCLUDED A BOOK PLUS MATERIALS TO HELP TEACHERS EXTEND CHILDREN'S LEARNING - SUCH AS A BOOK ABOUT VISITING THE DOCTOR PLUS A DOCTOR PLAY KIT SO CHILDREN COULD CONNECT WHAT THEY WERE READING WITH THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES.
