DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The T.R.U.E. Blue program (Teaching Rivers in an Urban Environment) is the Blue River Watershed Association's banner program. This four-day, 4-lesson program (taught exclusively by Blue River Watershed Association certified teachers) is a unique, experiential curriculum written specifically to engage students in grade levels 6 - 12. Students are given an introduction to storm water runoff, watershed and water quality issues, and the effects of human impact. An in-class practice session using HACH water quality test kits is done previous to going to the river test site. After the raw data is collected streamside, analysis is conducted to determine the Water Quality Index Number for the tested site. Young people living in the urban core may not always realize their potential or available career opportunities. Students work side-by-side with professional volunteers at the river develop relationships with them. Perhaps for the first time, these students can see themselves as professionals in a rewarding and enjoyable field. At a recent class at the river, one young student expressed, "What do I have to do to be able to do this the rest of my life. This is so cool. I love it!" When the instructor explained to the student the coursework that was needed to pursue in college, what degrees could be attained, and what the job potential was and the future held. The student further pondered, "I never wanted to go to college before, but now I do." The impacts of TRUE Blue run deep in our community's youth.$0$41,184
