Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

Each Board member will receive a copy of the Form 990 prior to filing. After allowing time for individual review, the Board will hold a telephone conference call to discuss any questions that may arise. At the conclusion of the call, the foundation President will call for a Board vote to approve acceptance of the Form 990 as shown. The President or Treasurer will sign the 990 on behalf of the organization, and it will be filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Any major contracts for service (audit, direct mail, and others) are reviewed as part of the budget process. The foundation's policies and procedures indicate to annually review contracts for any conflicts. Board members are also required to annually disclose any potential conflicts of interest. These are reviewed and appropriate actions taken as necessary.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

Annual compensation adjustments are approved by the Board. AFP salary survey information was used in 2011 to assure the Executive Director's compensation was in line with market norms. There are currently no employees described in 15B.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The foundation will furnish such documents upon reasonable, written request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0See Schedule O.Leadership is at the core of Pi Beta Phi; dating back to its founding in 1867 in Monmouth, IL. Pi Beta Phi has been a leader in developing women of intellect, courage and compassion. It was this focus on leadership that enabled Pi Beta Phi to be the first Greek lettered organization to adopt its own philanthropy in 1912. Today, leadership programming is a key part of the membership experience at all levels of the organization, from undergraduate collegians to alumnae of all ages. Every leadership program offered by Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women is supported in some way by Pi Beta Phi Foundation grants. These programs include Pi Phi's trademarked Leading with Values programming, leadership academies and convention, online learning, and the Leadership Development Consultant Program, which last year made 143 chapter visits and provided 1,430 individualized mentoring sessions. Leadership programming educates undergraduate women and develops the next generation of leaders in the fight for literacy, so that we can have a greater impact on our communities. More than 14,000 undergraduates and thousands more alumnae were touched in some way by the leadership programming offered by Pi Beta Phi in FY 15-16.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0See Schedule O.Pi Beta Phi has had a focus on philanthropy from the very start. It was the first Greek lettered organization to establish its own national philanthropic project with the founding of the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School in Appalachia (now modern day Gatlinburg, TN) in 1912. Today, Pi Phi's focus on philanthropy remains centered on advancing literacy through Read>Lead>Achieve. Literally tens of thousands of children were assisted through Pi Phi's literacy efforts in FY15-16 through specific initiatives like Champions Are Readers, Arrow in the Arctic and the First Book partnership. On July 1, 2013, Pi Beta Phi unveiled The Story of One, Pi Phi's campaign to impact one million lives through Read>Lead>Achieve by its 150th anniversary in 2017. Literacy support is provided through grants. Pi Beta Phi Foundation also offers direct literacy programming grants in the form of Special Impact Grants and Local Impact Grants. Special Impact Grants are made to 501(c)(3) organizations with literacy programs via a robust application and evaluation process, under the guidance of a specific committee. Local Impact Grants are made to 501(c)(3) organizations with literacy programs via nominations from Pi Beta Phi chapters and alumnae clubs. Pi Beta Phi Foundation also offers directly the Emma Harper Turner Fund program, which provides assistance to members who encounter dire financial need due to job loss, significant illness, or death of a parent or spouse. One-time financial gifts are made to members who demonstrate severe financial stress. Grants are made via a robust application and evaluation process, under the guidance of a specific committee trained to assess individual need. Both collegiate and alumnae members are eligible for assistance.
