Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We are a mental healthcare agency that provides office-based counseling, school-based counseling, psychiatric care, classroom behavioral health presentations, and parenting skills classes. We provide individual and group counseling.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Catholic family services' language access metro project (lamp), now in its 15th year, continued to provide professional 24/7 interpretation services to st. Louis-area immigrants and refugees who either cannot speak english or have limited proficiency in the language. During the past year, lamp interpreters served more than 11,000 unduplicated clients at over 33,000 appointments. Approximately 95 percent of these appointments were medical appointments, with the large majority of those interpretation services being provided free of charge to the foreign-born residents being examined or treated. In addition, lamps office received more than 9,000 phone calls during the year. A significant number of these phone calls involved over-the-phone interpreting, such as when explaining medical test results or preoperative instructions to immigrants or refugees. Lamp staffs 120 trained interpreters who collectively are fluent in 43 languages. All have received 40 of certification training in bridging the gap, which is a nationally recognized curriculum that provides bilingual individuals with best practices instruction in medical interpreting. In addition to providing interpreting at medical appointments, lamp staff members also interpret at law offices, during interactions between non-english-speaking refugees and their resettlement agency case managers, at school parent-teacher conferences, and during mental healthcare counseling sessions. In addition, lamp interpreters provide translation services, i.e., translating written (mostly legal) documents for immigrants and refugees.
Activity 3
The agency's school partnership program (spp) served 104 st. Louis-area schools and provided free-of-charge school-based counseling to 1,288 students. Mental health issues endured by these children included anxiety, depression, add/adhd, asperger's syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, and significant grief stemming from the death of a parent or other loved one. Program therapists worked with parents, teachers, principals, administrators, and school nurses to provide a system of care team approach to helping these children to cope with and overcome their issues. In addition, spp, which staffs 26 master's-trained therapists, provided classroom behavioral health presentations to more than 10,000 area schoolchildren. Presentation topics included anti-bullying techniques, conflict resolution skills, and anger management techniques. During the presentations, the therapists utilized best practice techniques that included verbal presentation, role playing, interactive activities, written exercises, video format, and storytelling. They also spoke with the teachers to guide them concerning how to best reinforce presentation content with the students.
