Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Other

Part IX - The organization shares staff, facilities, and some overhead expenses with another tax-exempt organization. Most of the expenses are paid by this organization and are reimbursed by the other for its share of expenses based on time spent on projects or other reasonable method. This organization paid and reported the total of salary/wages of the shared staff under its Federal ID number. The expenses in Part IX are only the organizations portion of the shared expenses.

Other

Pt.VII, col.D - The amount of compensation represents the total paid to the executive director for 2024 and included on the W-2 for 2024 filed using this Federal ID number. As noted above, this expense was shared with another organization. Only this organizations portion of expense was reported on Pt.IX, line 5.

Pt VI, Line 11B

The 990 draft was emailed to board members with a request that each member respond during a comment period with either an approval or with additions/corrections. Responses, if any, were then summarized and any changes forwarded to the tax preparer for inclusion in the final return.

Pt VI, Line 12C

Each board member and the executive director sign the conflict of interest form annually. If any potential conflict should arise, the individuals are required to report and discuss the issue.

Pt VI, Line 15A

Board members reviewed compensation of executive directors of not-for-profits in the metropolitan area with similar annual revenues and personnel to determine that compensation was reasonable and comparable.

Pt VI, Line 15B

The executive director determined through discussions with other E.D.s and community members that the compensation for staff was reasonable and comparable.

Other

Pt.XII, line 2a - Although the organization does not obtain compiled or audited statements, it contracts with a CPA who reviews the transactions quarterly and is available for consultation as needed. She provides preparation engagement statements which are similar to compiled statements. Due to the small number of board members, all are involved in reviewing the financial statements and 990 and monitoring the overall financial affairs of the organization.

Pt VI, Line 18

The documents are available upon request or on the Guidestar/Candid website.

Pt VI, Line 19

The governing documents and 990s are available to the public on request and the 990s are on Guidestar/Candid.

Other

Pt.I, line 5 and Pt.V, question 2a - The organization shares personnel and overhead costs with Abortion Action Missouri Foundation (AAMF) as noted above. The total number of W-2s issued by Abortion Action Missouri for 2024 was 16 - 13 employees provided services to both organizations and 3 provided services to this organization only. The number 5 in these boxes represents the estimated FTEs of staff time spent on this organizations activities.

Other

The name of the organization was changed effective July 10, 2023 from NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri to ABORTION ACTION MISSOURI. The Secretary of State documents about the name change were attached to the 2022 form 990 - filed for the short-year April 1 - December 31, 2022.

Pt VI, Line 6

Membership is open to any person, firm, or corporation who supports the Organizations mission and vision. Dues, either monetary or by some action within the last twelve months, are set by the Board of Directors. Membership is terminated if dues are not paid within fourteen months after the last dues payment.

Pt VI, Line 7A

Persons who are members in good standing are eligible to vote on matters presented and are eligible to be a director or officer. The Board of Directors is elected at the annual meeting by members in good standing.

Pt VI, Line 7B

The property, business and affairs of the Organization shall be the responsibility of the Board of Directors, and all lawful powers of the Organization shall be vested in and exercised by the Board.

Other

Pt. III, line 4a -Abortion Action Missouri (AAM) envisions a world with stigma-free abortion access and reproductive freedom for all; our mission is to foster and sustain the Midwest movement for reproductive freedom. Over the past 50 years, AAM has advocated about matters regarding contraceptive access, access to emergency contraception in emergency rooms, access to Title X family planning services, the harm of anti-abortion fake clinics - AKA unregulated pregnancy centers, the landscape of sex education in Missouri, and a host of other topics related to reproductive health and rights. With the fall of Roe v Wade in June 2022, Missouri became the first state to implement an abortion ban. In 2024 our primary mission was the advancement of The Right to Reproductive Freedom initiative to end Missouris abortion ban at the ballot box. The Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative enshrines the right to abortion, birth control, miscarriage care, prenatal and postpartum care, respectful birthing conditions, and the right to other reproductive health care in the state constitution. The passage of this amendment provides a legal pathway to challenge both Missouris abortion ban and the myriad TRAP laws that forced providers to cease providing abortion care. AAM played a critical role in activating a statewide base of more than 80,000 members to advance this measure. AAM hosted or participated in more than 150 total events in 2023 educating more than 12,000 Missourians on issues of reproductive health, rights, and freedom. Abortion Action Missouri had a thriving field team in 2024, knocking on more than 75,000 doors, and talking to thousands of supporters about ending Missouris abortion ban, why its important to have elected leaders who will commit to fighting for reproductive freedom in the Missouri state legislature, and helping to support endorsed reproductive freedom champions in municipalities across the state. The field team, volunteers, and thousands of supporters collected 140,000 signatures to get the The Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative on the ballot and educate Missourians and lawmakers. The organization helped to organize media campaigns and wrote op-ed pieces and editorials in support of every individuals right to decide if, when, how, and with whom to start or grow their family. The organization also provided briefing papers to the lawmakers, community leaders, and the public. The organization is committed to being an anti-racist organization supporting and lifting up the voices of all those most disproportionately impacted by the dangerous abortion ban now in place. With more than two dozen organizational allies, all working for the health and safety of Missouri women and families, we sought to protect individual rights and the rights of families, worked with faith-community allies, and organized against threats posed by the legislature, policymakers, and in the community generally.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Part IX - The organization shares staff, facilities, and some overhead expenses with another tax-exempt organization.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Pt.VII, col.D - The amount of compensation represents the total paid to the executive director for 2024 and included on the W-2 for 2024 filed using this Federal ID number. As noted above, this expense was shared with another organization. Only this organizations portion of expense was reported on Pt.IX, line 5.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The 990 draft was emailed to board members with a request that each member respond during a comment period with either an approval or with additions/corrections. Responses, if any, were then summarized and any changes forwarded to the tax preparer for inclusion in the final return.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Each board member and the executive director sign the conflict of interest form annually. If any potential conflict should arise, the individuals are required to report and discuss the issue.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Board members reviewed compensation of executive directors of not-for-profits in the metropolitan area with similar annual revenues and personnel to determine that compensation was reasonable and comparable.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5The executive director determined through discussions with other E.D.s and community members that the compensation for staff was reasonable and comparable.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6Pt.XII, line 2a - Although the organization does not obtain compiled or audited statements, it contracts with a CPA who reviews the transactions quarterly and is available for consultation as needed. She provides preparation engagement statements which are similar to compiled statements. Due to the small number of board members, all are involved in reviewing the financial statements and 990 and monitoring the overall financial affairs of the organization.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt7The documents are available upon request or on the Guidestar/Candid website.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt8The governing documents and 990s are available to the public on request and the 990s are on Guidestar/Candid.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt14Pt.
