Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Community engagement a.trek the trails: in 2018-2019 and fy 2019-2020 fwt partnered with the city of fort wayne and summit city bicycles to provide a summer-long series of family-friendly bicycle rides at various locations throughout the trail system. Goals are to engage with the public, introduce the trail system to new users, and built affinity for the trails with potential donors. Total riders in 2019-2020 to date: 1,433, a 9% increase over the previous year. Total riders in 2018-2019: 1,229. Total riders in 2017-2018: 1052. B.pufferbelly run/walk/stroll: since 2010, the pufferbelly race has provided a healthy, family-friendly activity, and a chance to share the pufferbelly trail story. In 2018-2019, the race was attended by 285 people due to the extended closure of the traditional route and the subsequent relocation of the event (due to an exciting trail project on dupont road). In 2019 the event was held at its traditional location, and participation was 375. C.trail map and app: beginning with the 2012 trail map, fwt has worked to provide an easy-to-read map of the trail system, showing existing trails and current trail projects. The first trail map showed 68 miles of completed trails. The 2019 trail maps (now available in both county-wide, and fort wayne central city formats) includes 115 miles of completed trails, illustrating the need for the annualy updated publication. In 2012 fwt printed 25,000 maps. In 2018-2019 70,000 maps were printed (40,000 county maps and 30,000 downtown maps), and all but a handful were disbursed in less than 10 months. The 2019-2020 trail maps have also been printed in the same quantity, and nearly all have been distributed. Trail development and advocacy a.pufferbelly trail: in 2018-2019 fwt assisted allen county government with preparation of the next level trails grant, awarded for 3.3 million in may, 2019 to complete the pufferbelly trail from life bridge trailhead to fitch road. Fwt assisted with contacting property owner to receive letters of commitment, met with neighborhood groups, worked with the engineering firm and county grants staff. B.covington trail: in 2018-2019 fwt committed 150,000 to the city of fort wayne for the covington road trail project, from hadley road to getz road. Fwt also initiated its trail hub program that will provide a rest area with donor recognition along this new trail, while generating funds for future trail development. In 2018-2019 fwt secured a commitment for 50,000 for this project. In fy 2019-2020, an additional 16,000 has been secured. C.union chapel trail: in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 fwt has worked with engineers and allen county staff to design a trail on union chapel from auburn road to life bridge trailhead. In 2019-2020 fwt will work with allen county government to prepare the next level trails grant for funding to complete this section. D.cedar creek parks trails: in 2018-2019 fwt assisted the newallen alliance as they submitted a stellar communities application to the indiana office of community rural affairs, and secured commitments of over 7 million from local governments to fund trail projects in leo-cedarville, grabill, new haven, monroeville and woodburn as part of the proposed projects. E.other advocacy and trail development activities: in 2018-2019 fwt also initiated the payton county park trail hub project, similar to the covington project described above. In 2018-2019 this project secured 20,000 in commitments. In 2019-2020, an additional 20,000 has been secured to date. F. Golden spike trail marker: in july 2019, fwt and the city of fort wayne began preparation of a next level trails grant application for the final 1.78-mile section of pufferbelly trail, to be located roughly between glenbrook mall and washington center road. Fwt has begun a new project to secure commitments of 250,000 in local matching funds for the project. To date, 21,000 has been secured, and additional requests totaling 1,500,000 are pending.
