Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The directors council has two primary objectives. The first is to provide support to fellow members and their organizations through collective grant applications, technical support, and peer guidance. The second is to pool resources to create efficient and effective social service programs that are lacking in the community.

The directors council is designed to leverage the collective power of its members to improve the well-being of the community.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
African American Leadership Forum (AALF) The Directors Council, brings together African Americans in the Des Moines community to prioritize the most critical issues facing African Americans and create an agenda and steps to address those issues and offer solutions around family, leadership development, education, criminal justice, economic development and health. African American Leadership Academy AALF began the African American Leadership Academy to prepare the next generation of leaders for the African American community. The group continues to work alongside other community partners to create a thriving African American community in central Iowa. Doing More in the Core The Directors Council developed Doing More in the Core (formerly known as Summer in the City-Investing in the Core) to offer programs for children and families during the ten weeks in the summer. Programs are focused in the ten neighborhoods that make up the Urban Core (inner city) of Des Moines during the early evening hours. The Directors Council partners with the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, the United Way of Central Iowa, and local non-profit organizations and neighborhood associations to offer a variety of activities throughout the summer.$17,034$40,169
