BECAUSE OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, THE WORLD PRESS INSTITUTE (WPI) SUSPENDED ITS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING MAY 31, 2021. APPROXIMATELY 20 FINALISTS FOR THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM THAT WPI HAD PLANNED TO COMMENCE IN AUGUST 2020 HAD BEEN SELECTED IN THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR, AND THESE FINALISTS WERE INFORMED OF THE SUSPENSION OF THE PROGRAM. THE 10 FELLOWS WHO WE WILL CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE IN WPI'S NEXT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM WILL BE CHOSEN FROM THIS GROUP OF FINALISTS. TO KEEP THE WPI BRAND ALIVE AND OPERATING, WE INSTEAD CONDUCTED A SERIES OF FOUR (4) WEBINARS FOR JOURNALISTS AROUND THE WORLD. NEARLY 200 JOURNALISTS, INCLUDING MANY WPI ALUMNI JOURNALISTS, PARTICIPATED IN THESE WEBINARS. TOPICS CONSIDERED IN THIS WEBINAR SERIES INCLUDED AN ANALYSIS OF THE U.S. PRESIDENTIAL 2020 ELECTION, THE IMPACT OF THE COVID PANDEMIC ON PRESS FREEDOM, AND THE SPREAD OF ONLINE DISINFORMATION.WPI WILL RESUME ITS CORE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN MARCH 2022, WITH A NINE (9) WEEK TRAVEL AND STUDY PROGRAM LIKE ITS PAST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS, ASSUMING WE DETERMINE THAT IT WILL BE SAFE TO ATTEND IN-PERSON MEETINGS AND TO THE EXTENT ORGANIZATIONS WE VISIT WILL ALLOW.THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS:A. BRING 10 JOURNALISTS EACH YEAR FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO THE UNITED STATES TO EXPERIENCE THE COMPLEXITIES OF U.S. LIFE THROUGH THE PRISM OF A REPORTER WORKING UNDER FIRST AMENDMENT CONDITIONS.B. EXPOSE THE FELLOWS TO U.S. JOURNALISTIC PRACTICES AND STANDARDS THROUGH A SERIES OF SEMINARS, BRIEFINGS AND VISITS TO NEWSROOMS, LARGE AND SMALL.C. TEACH FELLOWS TO MAKE USE OF AND UNDERSTAND INSTITUTIONS BY ENCOURAGING THEM TO RESEARCH AND CONDUCT INTERVIEWS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF GOVERNMENT BODIES AT ALL LEVELS, MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS, SMALL LOCAL COMPANIES, PHILANTHROPISTS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, AND OTHERS.D. FOSTER REPORTING ACCURACY ABOUT THE U.S. BY INTRODUCING FELLOWS TO A WIDE VARIETY OF U.S. EXPERIENCES, INCLUDING PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT; ENTERTAINMENT RANGING FROM CLASSICAL CONCERTS TO BLOCK PARTIES; URBAN AND RURAL LIFESTYLES; SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY; AND ISSUES OF RACE, GENDER AND ETHNICITY.E. ENCOURAGE FELLOWS TO REPORT ON A RANGE OF SOCIAL ISSUES TO SEE HOW PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONS WITHIN THE U.S. ADDRESS THEM.
