United way of 1000 lakes' mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our communities in the greater itasca area. We are working to advance the common good focusing on the critical needs of our communities. Our focus is in education, health and income-the building blocks for a good quality of life. United way's goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of these problems. We do this by researching, identifying, analyzing and reporting on our communities' most pressing issues. We strategically invest in local programs and high-impact initiatives that achieve measurable outcomes and demonstrate results. We unite our efforts with others to achieve positive community change and together-united-we inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. “OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Bright Red Bookshelf - United Way of 1000 Lakes has partnered with Project Read to support the "Bright Red Bookshelf," that promotes literacy development by getting books into the hands and homes of young readers across the greater Itasca area. As a partner, United Way of 1000 Lakes works to recirculate gently used children's books back into the community where they are made available free for families to own. Books are collected in drop off areas around the community, as well as organized book drives throughout the year. These books are sorted, cleaned and labeled with a Bright Red Bookshelf sticker and then set out on red painted bookshelves at varies sights around the community. The program increases book ownership in low-income homes, encourages parent-child interactions with books, involves community support of literacy, and develops confidence in young readers.”
“On January 1, 2009, the Entity adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. The Entity has analyzed the tax positions taken in its filings with the Internal Revenue Service and state jurisdictions where it operates. The Entity believes that its income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse affect on the Entity's financial condition, results of operations or cash flows. Accordingly, the Entity has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at June 30, 2014.The Entity is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The Entity believes it is no longer subject to income tax examinations for years prior to 2010.The Entitys policy is to classify income tax related interest and penalties in interest expense and other expenses, respectively.”

Each year a council made up of community members, is responsible for reviewing agencies applying for United Way funding by evaluating programs, visiting agency sites, interviewing staff and board members, and reviewing financial records to develop an understanding of the agencies' community impact. The council then provides the funding recommendations for approval to the United Way Board of Directors. Allocations are granted to programs that align with the community needs. United Way of 1000 Lakes works to leverage and maximize available resources to achieve measurable results to provide the greatest impact to the community. To accomplish this, United Way of 1000 Lakes is committed to addressing the following community priorities: 1) Education - fostering successful children and youth. United Way helps ensure that children are ready to succeed in school and life by strategically investing in programs and initiatives that increase school readiness, improve academic achievement, and promote positive youth development through quality programming and care outside of school. 2) Health - improving people's health and independence. United Way increases access to medical care, education and support for individuals and families, by strategically investing in programs that promote mental, physical and social well-being. 3) Income and Stability - promote financial stability and independence across the life cycle. United way helps individuals and families by strategically investing in programs that increase income, savings and assets that lead to financial stability and independence. United Way supports organizations that provide a strong network of basic needs that work to meet people's emergency and transitional needs for food, shelter, housing, safety and clothing. United Way of 1000 Lakes has collaborated with other non-profits, government, business people and professionals around Minnesota to bring 211; a single call taht provides referrals about food, housing, childcare and emergency resources. |

UNITED WAY OF 1000 LAKES HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE ITASCA AREA STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE. A COALITION OF YOUTH PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, WHO BELIEVE THAT EVERY CHILD AND YOUTH DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED, AND THAT IT REALLY DOES TAKE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE.
