Hiia provides the volunteer manpower to plan and execute all social activities, including but not limited to: a "welcome back" get together, an annual 4th of july parade, a chowder "cook-off", a chicken wing "cook-off", an annual field day & dance, and an annual labor day get-together, including a steak fry and a dance. In most cases, these social events are the only opportunity for all of the members of the community to get together. These social events also take the form of fundraisers with any revenues in excess of expenses going into the general fund. Field day is generally the biggest event of the season and brings together most islanders and many visitors. This is a family outing with races and competitions held throughout the day for kids and adults alike. These events take the most planning and they require the help of many volunteers to run the events, purchase, prepare and cook the food, sell tickets, and later clean up.
