DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Special Needs Children Project seeks to address the social and physical needs of children with disabilities and their families in Kyrgyzstan. The project includes the following; providing physical therapy to children, providing training in physical therapy for caregivers and community members, providing education and life skills training, strengthening the social foundation for families, providing adaptive equipment, and working to see institutionalized children reunited with their biological families. The project has also established a therapeutic horse-riding program and seeks to promote this method of therapy for children with special needs in Kyrgyzstan. There were a total of 1033 direct beneficiaries from the project in 2023 including children with disabilities receiving therapy and equipment. This also includes their immediate caregivers receiving instruction and support. In addition, there were 1008 indirect beneficiaries which include other family members.$28,810$28,810
The Community Health Education Project provides participatory, preventative health education to rural communities in Kyrgyzstan in a manner that helps participants pass on what they have learned to others in their community. Areas addressed reflect local concerns and include sanitation, hygiene, disease prevention, women's health, natural childbirth, nutrition, stress management, healthy relationships, parenting, and teenage health. Nutritional information and recipes are developed in the Kyrgyz language and published on Instagram to further promote good health. Birthing classes are also offered to educate women on issues of labor and birth preparation, nutrition, and fetal development. The project also trains and certifies doulas in Kyrgyzstan and promotes this form of assistance to women in labor as another way to improve birth outcomes. In addition, in 2023 we were able to distribute 20 "non-pneumatic anti-shock garments" to 10 different hospitals throughout the country. These lifesaving "garments" are used in low-resource countries to save the lives of women who hemorrhage after birth (the number one cause of maternal mortality around the world). There were a total of 1141 direct participants in trainings and seminars with an additional 4804 indirect beneficiaries which included family members of participants.$17,324$17,324
In a pastoralist society, the health of the community's animals impacts the health of the community's people - both physically and economically. Starting in 2020, we began the translation of the book, Handbook of Animal Health. The book was translated to both Kyrgyz and Russian, and after some delays getting to print, they were finally published and ready at the end of June 2023. The author, Dr. Peter Quesenberry came from Thailand (where he lives) at the end of June for an in-person book promotions ceremony to launch the distribution of the books. We hired a local veterinarian to our team as our book promotions campaign manager, and we traveled through the country to every single region promoting the book to universities, agricultural extension offices, veterinarians, and farmers. In the capital, we presented the book to the National Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Veterinary Associations, and the head of the National Veterinary College at the Agrarian University in the capital city.
