Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Encourage, support and partner with people living in extreme poverty in uganda as they transform their lives and become self-sufficient through greater access to quality health care, education and economic opportunities.

Give Us Wings works together with adults and children in Kenya and Uganda to eradicate poverty. We support community development projects, and the medical and educational needs of the poorest of the poor in forgotten villages. With an approach of transformation rather than merely direct aid, Give Us Wings funds community development projects, provides financial assistance and training for economic self-sufficiency, and funds educational and medical needs of adults and children in Africa.

IRS990/Desc0GIVE US WINGS IN KENYAHealth Care: Give Us Wings, using the funds from the Mary Alphonse Bradley Fund, completed construction of the Maternity Ward, Laboratory and Store Room at the Nyaoga Community Dispensary. Some of the funds were also used to wire all 4 buildings in the compound for electricity and hook them up to the public electricity. (The Nyaoga Community Dispensary Main Ward, the Maternity Ward, the Clinic Staff House and the Lake Victoria Young Women's Academy.) Education: Give Us Wings has continued to fund the Lake Victoria Young Women's Academy. 13 young women attended the school in 2016. They all sat for their secondary school application test. They all passed and one of the young women scored in the top 10% of all students in the district.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0GIVE US WINGS IN UGANDAEducation: We have continued to expand the Family to Family program. We increased the number of registered families from 47 to 63 in 2016. The families in Uganda choose one of their children (usually the youngest girl) to attend a high quality private school. The children also receive health care services through our clinic, the St. John's Kayoro Health Center. The parents take an active role in forums sponsored by Give Us Wings. The forums focus on many topics, such as Child Welfare and Rights and Positive Parenting. The children also participate in community service projects to help them understand that they can give back to their communities.Health Care: Give Us Wings continues to be the main funder of the St. John's Kayoro Health Center. In 2016, the clinic treated 7,680 patients in the clinic and at community outreach clinics. 559 women received pre-natal care at the clinic. And 1,698 children received a variety of immunizations from clinic staff. The clinic staff launched a community health insurance program that will encourage people to seek preventative care and get treatment for injuries and illnesses earlier, thereby improving their chances of recovering and surviving. The staff enrolled about 230 people in the program and entered into a partnership with a local school to provide medical services to their students. They will continue to expand enrollment in the health insurance program.Give Us Wings also provided funding that enabled the clinic to add an office, upgraded the pit latrines and washing areas and start construction of a Maternity Ward. These improvements are necessary to handle the increased patient load expected as a result of starting the insurance program. The staff is also working to comply with government regulations that will result in the clinic becoming a 24-hour facility.Economic Sustainability: Give Us Wings micro-finance program has evolved into a Farmers' Cooperative Society. Hundreds of families have joined the Cooperative. The Cooperative will help the farmers by providing storage facilities for their harvest and allow them to combine their produce and sell at a higher price. It will also serve as a Village Savings and Loan. Cooperative members can deposit their money and receive interest on their deposits, they can also take out bridge loans so that they will have money to invest in their farming and which they will pay back when their harvest is sold.
