Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Vine is redefining aging and promoting the wellbeing of aging adults through programming, services, and community engagement.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Transportationvine's volunteer driver program is nationally recognized for excellence and efficiency, providing 110 rides per weekday throughout vine's service area. Vine's trained and insured volunteer drivers are available to help older adults shop and do errands, attend medical appointments and social and congregational events. If requested, volunteer escorts are available to accompany passengers during doctor's visits. Rides are available both locally and to out-of-town medical appointments. Transportation is available, on a limited basis, for people under age 60 with disabilities or who are encountering difficult life circumstances. (continued on schedule o) (continued from page 2, part iii, line 4b) through the people to jobs program, vine coordinates employment related transportation for single parents, immigrants, and other low-income workers. Transporting their children to daycare or school, while parents work, is also an important part of the service provided. Vine works closely with staff at county human services to provide medical rides for low-income passengers of all ages. Close to 1,000 people benefit from vine's transportation programs each year. Program funding is provided by the greater mankato area united way, mndot, dhs, blue earth county, and passengers.
Activity 3
Home safe and soundthanks to start-up funding provided by a community services/services development grant from the mn department of human services, vine's geographic and menu of services for people age 65+ and their caregivers is expanding. Chore, home modification, caregiver support, and social model and in-home respite services are now offered within a 50-mile radius of mankato in blue earth, brown, le sueur, nicollet, sibley, watonwan, and waseca counties. Working in partnership with health care providers, local licensed tradespeople, and the caring people of the minnesota river valley, affordable services are available to assist older friends and neighbors to age in place and delay a more costly move to an assisted living (continued on schedule o)(continued from page 2, part iii, line 4c) facility or nursing home. Recipients are billed for services, based on a sliding fee scale, and long-term care insurance can be billed, when appropriate. Vine works closely with county human services and accepts payment from public funding sources.

IRS990/Description0SUMMIT CENTERTHE SUMMIT CENTER ENGAGES AGING ADULTS IN ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND THE COMMUNITY. WE OFFER HEALTH CLINICS, EXERCISE CLASSES, EDUCATIONAL TRIPS AND PROGRAMS, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE NEWS OF THE SUMMIT NEWSLETTER IS PUBLISHED EVERY OTHER MONTH AND IS MAILED TO 3,250 OLDER ADULTS. IT CAN BE VIEWED ONLINE AT: WWW.VINEVOLUNTEERS.COM/VINE/NEWSLETTERS. SUMMIT CENTER FUNDING COMES FROM THE GREATER MANKATO AREA UNITED WAY, THE CITIES OF MANKATO AND NORTH MANKATO, FUNDRAISERS, AND PROGRAM REGISTRATION FEES.WHEN VINE ASSUMED MANAGEMENT OF THE FAILING SENIOR CENTER IN 2006, THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT 50 PEOPLE USING (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A) THE FACILITY EACH MONTH. WITH A FRESH COAT OF PAINT, ENHANCED PROGRAMMING, EXTENDED HOURS OF OPERATION, AND THE ADDITION OF A WIDE ARRAY OF LIFE-LONG LEARNING AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES, MONTHLY ATTENDANCE HAS GROWN TO 530. THE INCREASED USAGE AND POPULARITY OF THE SUMMIT CENTER PRECIPITATED VINE'S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO CREATE AN ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER. IN 2010, THE BLUE EARTH COUNTY BOARD OFFERED A FORMER MANKATO STATE COLLEGE CLASSROOM BUILDING (60,000 SQ. FT. ON A 2.75-ACRE CITY-CENTER LOT) FOR ONE DOLLAR, PROVIDED WE COULD RAISE $1.7 MILLION FOR BASIC RENOVATION AND REPAY A $195,000 STATE LOAN FOR ASBESTOS ABATEMENT. A FIVE-YEAR PLAN CREATED BY LOCAL BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS AND REVIEWED BY LENDING INSTITUTIONS ESTABLISHED VINE'S CAPACITY TO UNDERTAKE THIS MAJOR INITIATIVE.-VINE COMPLETED A FEASIBILITY STUDY, MOUNTED A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN, AND ON OCTOBER 15, 2012, ACQUIRED THE NICHOLS BUILDING. -COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS EXCEEDED 2,500 HOURS OF DECONSTRUCTION WORK: REMOVING WALLS AND CEILINGS, AND RECYCLING BUILDING MATERIALS. -IN JUNE 2013, CONSTRUCTION CREWS BEGAN TRANSFORMING THE 1950S-ERA BUILDING INTO THE VINE ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER. -THE PHASE 1 PROJECT COST IS $6.3 MILLION. VINE HAS RAISED $2.4 MILLION IN PRIVATE FUNDING, SECURED BANK FINANCING, AND DEVELOPED A PLAN TO RENT AN UPPER FLOOR TO OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. THIS CO-LOCATION WILL HELP US ALL STRENGTHEN OUR COLLABORATIVE OUTREACH TO NEW AMERICANS, PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES AND MENTAL ILLNESSES, AND THOSE REQUIRING HOSPICE CARE.NEXT SPRING, THE REPURPOSED BUILDING WILL BECOME THE NEW HOME OF VINE AND THE SUMMIT CENTER. IT WILL PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED PARKING SPACE AND BRING TOGETHER THE ORGANIZATION'S OPERATIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE, AND STORAGE SPACES. (VINE'S TRAILERS, TOOLS, "RAKE THE TOWN" RAKES, LAWN MOWERS, AND SNOW BLOWERS ARE CURRENTLY STORED IN THE GARAGES OF STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND CARE RECEIVERS.)THE VISION FOR THE NEW ADULT COMMUNITY CENTER IS THAT OUR NEIGHBORS "IN MID-LIFE AND BEYOND" WILL HAVE A SPACE FOR POSITIVE AGING - A PLACE TO ENJOY EXERCISE, MUSIC, CONVERSATION, LIFE-LONG LEARNING, AND A WIDE RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT. LOCATED ON A PUBLIC BUS LINE, THIS "ONE-STOP SHOP" WILL HELP AGING ADULTS TO IMPROVE OR MAINTAIN THEIR PHYSICAL HEALTH, SOCIALIZE WITH PEERS, VOLUNTEER TO HELP OTHERS, AND ACCESS NEEDED SERVICES.WE ARE CREATING A VENUE FOR COMMUNITY-WIDE SOCIAL CONNECTION THAT WILL LINK ADULTS OF VARYING ABILITIES, ECONOMIC STATUS, AND CULTURES. PHASE I PLANS (SEE AGINGTOTHEMAX.COM) INCLUDE NUMEROUS "CENTERS" IN ADDITION TO MEETING, EXERCISE, AND PROGRAM SPACES: -RESPITE CENTER - EXPANDING OUR "SOME TIME AWAY" PROGRAM TO OFFER DAYTIME, EVENING, AND WEEKEND RESPITE CARE TO SUPPORT CAREGIVING FAMILIES. -HEALTH CENTER - IMPROVING ON OUR CURRENT FACILITIES FOR MEDICATION MANAGEMENT, BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING, TOE-NAIL CLIPPING, AND MASSAGE. -ADULT LITERACY CENTER - SPACE FOR SKILLED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ADULT LEARNERS IMPROVE THEIR READING, INFORMATION LITERACY, AND BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS, ALL OF WHICH ARE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL LIVING IN OUR INCREASINGLY "ONLINE SELF-SERVICE" WORLD. -TECHNOLOGY TRAINING CENTER - PERMANENT SPACE FOR THE VINE-SPONSORED AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
