Activity 2

Supported the Minnesota STEM Network, a new initiative of SciMathMN in collaboration with leading partners across Minnesota, to advance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in education, workforce development and community engagement. Outcomes included:- Completing the "Strategic Planning" initiative conducted by LarsonAllen and funded by Boston Scientific ($179,100). Specific questions addressed included: o Impact: Where and how can the Minnesota STEM Network add the greatest value to Minnesota's STEM needs, especially at the interface of education, business, and economic development in STEM?o Synergy: How can the data and "program inventory" of the Minnesota STEM Network be used to provide synergy and value, beyond information?o Stakeholder support: What will cause the institutional and individual leaders in STEM across the State to support the work of the Minnesota STEM Network . . . with their time, talent, and treasury?o Financial sustainability: How can SciMathMN and the Minnesota STEM Network build and sustain the resource base needed to implement the initiatives identified in the strategic plan? What is the financial future of the organization?- Improve STEM communications. o Expanded the electronic newsletter, E-Formation, to disseminate on-going, up-to date information to different audiences on a regular basis, according to different areas of interest. The newsletter, along with our website, will include quick electronic surveys to track public, business, educator and policymaker opinions on STEM education issues and such results will be made publicly available. o Improved website to increase dissemination of quality information on STEM issues; monitor and share state and national assessment results. Considered substantial redesign of website to take advantage of Web-2 technologies to create a more interactive environment.

Activity 3

Convened and evaluated a June Policymaker Briefing for state policymakers to identify unmet needs in STEM education; to discuss promising STEM education initiatives that will have an impact on workforce development; and to solicit recommendations of briefing participants. SciMathMN partnered with Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) to capture the story about the need for and development of math and science Frameworks for MN. The 30 minute program began airing on public television Sunday, January 8 2012. Other planning outcomes included: - Identifying policies that support improvement in STEM education- Evaluating and analyzing participants' feedback- Creating a prioritized list of recommendations and action items- Creating briefing information/results informing other SciMathMN initiatives
