To co-create sustainability on a personal organizational and planetary level. We have long defined sustainability as being "Ecologically sound economically viable socially just and humane and embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat people animals and the planet."
The Alliance for Sustainability is a non-profit organization working to bring about sustainability on a personal, organizational and planetary level. We accomplish this through education, action and partnerships focusing on communities, congregations and conscious consumers and citizens. Founded in 1983, we developed a widely used definition of sustainability: ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane, embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat animals, people and the Earth.

| The Alliance for Sustainability is a non-profit organization working to bring about sustainability on a personal, organizational and planetary level. We accomplish this through education, action and partnerships focusing on cities, congregations and conscious consumers and citizens. Founded in 1983, we developed a widely used definition of sustainability: ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane, embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat animals, people and the Earth. Sustainability Education - We train business, local government and community leaders on how to create sustainability action plans for their organizations and communities through interactive seminars "Sustainability and the Natural Step Framework: Creating a Win-Win-Win for People, Planet and Profits." This one-day or two- evening seminar provides a fun, positive, interactive and life-changing approach for saving money and becoming sustainable in your home, work and community. It's a great opportunity to explore a green career and workplace. Our trainings, seminars and workshops provide a fun, positive, interactive and life-changing approach for saving money and becoming sustainable in your home, work and community. Linking Congregations in Communities - Volunteers from congregational green teams come together in lively networking events to share their successful rain garden, community garden, energy efficiency, solar and waste reduction projects. We have grown a network of 500 volunteer leaders active with more than 100 congregations with Green Teams in the Twin Cities who attend our gatherings and receive our updates. Volunteer Green Team Leaders get re-energized when they meet with their peers from other congregations. In 5 communities we organized clusters of 5 or more congregations with Green Teams that meet twice a year, keeping their volunteers energized including Southwest & Downtown Minneapolis, Bloomington, Edina, Minnetonka, St. Paul, Cottage Grove, Woodbury, Roseville and Stillwater. Sustainable Communities - This spring through our Planning for Resilient Cities Workshops - 350 city staff, elected leaders and commission & citizen volunteers from 70 metro cities learned how they can include energy, resilience, equity, healthy food access and active living goals and strategies in their comprehensive plan updates. In October 2016 we will reconvene these cities to meet with MN EQB staff to explore how they can include strategies from the MN Climate Action plan. In January 2017 we will host Resilient Cities Clusters in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington Counties with 40 metro cities working together to share resilience goals and strategies they will include in their Comprehensive Plans to be completed by mid-2017. Suburban Citizen Environmental Commission/Task Force volunteers - Twice a year we convene volunteers active with the 50 cities in the metro area that have Environmental Commissions to share best practices. Through this project we link our clusters of congregations with their City's Environmental Commission members so they can do joint outreach to engage their residents to help meet their city's water quality, energy conservation and recycling goals. In 2016 we will support environmental commissioners to help their cities to include climate resilience in their comprehensive plan updates. Low income, communities of color and immigrant communities - We are a fiscal agent for the Community Table project that is empowering Hmong, Latino and African American and African Immigrant leaders to form small businesses to grow, process and distribute healthy food and increase their sales & incomes by forming cooperatives to aggregate their local, chemical-free produce. Community Solar Gardens - We are supporting neighborhoods and congregations to sign up their members to join consumer and pollinator friendly community solar gardens, to help expand solar in MN and achieve our statewide goal of 10% solar electricity. Watershed Stewards - We empower volunteer groups in neighborhoods, congregations and lake associations to enjoy and protect their lakes and creeks through working with Master Water Stewards to plant rain gardens, adopt storm drains, organize community clean ups in partnership with metro area cities and watershed districts. Keeping Minnesota on track to meet our climate and sustainability goals - We are engaging youth, businesses and citizen leaders to support our Governor the Met Council, legislature, state agencies and cities to create new jobs in Minnesota by implementing our state's renewable energy, energy efficiency and compact development goals. We are engaging our members to support wise state policies. In 2016 and 2017 we are supporting 40 metro area cities to include climate action strategies as part of their comprehensive plan updates, to help meet our State's climate goals that were included in the Metro Council's Thrive MSP 2040 vision statement. Ann and Walter Gips Sustainability Symposium - In 2017 our new Symposium will feature leading edge sustainability leaders. National Sustainability Campaign - The Alliance is now raising funds to create a tipping point for sustainability nation-wide through a new book on sustainability, a social media campaign, viral video, interactive website and national radio program. This would reach a wide national audience to both frame sustainability as a positive, mainstream idea and inspire and empower people to change their lifestyles and engage them in sustainable lifestyles and policies. | $40,506 | $40,506 |
