Casa de Esperanza currently provides 2 Centros de Informacion y Recursos (Information and Resource Centers)-one in Minneapolis and one in St. Paul- which are staffed by volunteers and open to anyone looking for information, resources, or free connection to the Internet or fax machine. In FY 2010 3,784 visitors sought information at the centers during 11,246 visits. Most visitors are Latino immigrants-monolingual Spanish speakers-seeking the resources and information needed to live successfully in Minnesota. The centers reduce the isolation and stress that are common immigrant experiences.Casa de Esperanza has conducted listening sessions with Latinos to measure their hopes, dreams, and goals; these listening sessions are the basis of our community-action planning. Fuerza Unida (Strength United) convenes community leaders to create action agendas and utilizes natural communication networks for information sharing throughout the community.The Peer Education Initiative prepares Latina youth and women to present educational workshops (talleres) to their peers and trains them in leadership and presentation skills. In FY 2010 180 youth, including 128 young Latinos, participated in talleres offered by the youth peer educators. Talleres for adults were attended by 280 participants. |

El Refugio, a 24-hour/365-day shelter for battered women and children, provided safety and advocacy for 162 women and children in FY 2010, including 33 Latinas and 64 Latino children. Management believes Casa de Esperanza did not have any unrelated business income in 2010 or 2009. Casa de Esperanza is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Federal and state tax authorities have the right to examine the current and prior three years returns. Any interest or penalties associated with tax positions are reported as such within the management and general expenses category. For 2010 and 2009, there were no such interest or penalties recorded in the financial statements. |
