Editorial:in 2011, we published nearly one hundred writers in eighteen titles, including four collections of poems, six works of fiction, five works of nonfiction (including two anthologies), and three paperback reprints. We shipped more than 120,000 copies of our books and reached more than 220,000 readers (by industry-standard measures) across the state, country, and world. From three debuts to six returning authors, our 2011 list offers ample evidence of milkweed editions' longstanding commitment to publishing emerging talent, and to developing longstanding, nurturing relationships with writers whose work advances our mission. There were many such distinctions in 2011, but prominent among them was a minnesota book award in fiction for vestments by john reimringer, and an american book award in fiction for extra indians by eric gansworth. In 2011, the books and authors we published garnered more than 300 reviews across the media spectrum. The coverage includes online, print, and broadcast media, including the believer; the boston globe; esquire; huffington post; the la times; minnesota monthly; mpr and npr; msp magazine; the new york times; pioneer press; the san francisco chronicle; star tribune; time magazine (international); vanity fair; and the washington post book world.

Outreach: - general -milkweed editions is one of very few publishers with an open submissions policy, resulting in the receipt in our office of several thousand manuscripts and proposals each year, all of which are read and evaluated. At considerable cost, we respond thoughtfully to each submission, as we feel that this service is part of our role as a nonprofit organization committed to engaging actively with the community. We accept online submissions, which is also rare among publishers. Additionally, over the course of 2011, our staff and authors participated in more than 250 events across the country at venues including libraries, bookstores, festivals, community centers, and universities across the country. Additionally, staff members served on panels for the minnesota state arts board. - alliance for reading - our alliance for reading outreach program has worked for more than ten years on programming in underserved schools, with the goal of instilling a love of reading among middle-grade students. Through author visits, in-class book clubs, class sets of novels, and the read, explore, create program, we provide innovative curricula. For the 2010-11 school year, the alliance for reading program served 1,100 students across metro-area elementary and middle school classrooms, reaching over 400 students to date this past fall (2011-12 school year). - reaching readers -through reaching readers, milkweed provides books to readers who otherwise would not have access to them. We partner with other organizations to distribute books across the countryreaching students, prisoners, veterans, and other underserved audiences. In 2011, we distributed books through the boys & girls club, the minnesota assistance council for veterans, the hmong international academy, the st. Paul rotary club, the texas book festival and more. - open book - as one of three founding tenants of open book, the literary and book arts center in downtown minneapolis, we continue to play an active role in managing the nation's largest standalone literary center. In 2011, our publisher & ceo spent roughly 100 hours engaged in the guidance of the nonprofit that manages the building as a result of his seat on its board of directors. Open book welcomes more than 11,000 visitors each month, and we are proud to have this venue for engaging with our community. - intern program -milkweed offers a prestigious training program for aspiring publishing professionals. In 2011, 15 people completed milkweed's comprehensive publishing internship program. The program draws students from colleges and universities and throughout minnesota and the surrounding states, as well as adults exploring a career change. The highly competitive four-month program has developed a reputation as the best place for those considering a publishing career to get hands-on experience in all aspects of literary publishing - editorial, production, marketing, development, and administration. Interns have gone on to publishing positions with minnesota and new york publishing houses.
