Activity 2

Intervention sojourner's community-based (non-shelter) services provide support and legal advocacy services to battered women in western hennepin county who are not staying in the shelter. This program provides battered women with information and referrals, personalized safety planning, weekly domestic voilence support groups, legal advocacy, and a 24 hour crisis-intervention response in partnership with law enforcement. Legal advocacy in the family court system helps battered women navigate various legal processes such as obtaining orders for protection or harassment restraining orders, child custody and visitation issues, and other civil matters. The main goals of sojourner's partnership with area law-enforcement are to provide an effective, supportive response to victims of battering and strong, consistent intervention with perpetrators of violence. An advocate from sojourner is on call 24 hours a day to respond to domestic abuse arrests in the cities of hopkins, minnetonka, mound, minnetrista, long lake, spring park, wayzata, minnetonka beach, st. Bonifacius, and orono. Sojourner's role is to encourage traditional systems to implement and/or follow policies and procedures that ensure an effective response to battering.

Activity 3

Community advocacy the sojourner volunteer and community outreach program provides volunteer opportunities to community members within sojourner programs. Volunteers staff the crisis line, assist the intervention project in providing 24 hour accessibility, and lend essential help to the shelter's children's programming. Volunteers also assist the organization by sitting on the board of directors and by providing support for special events such as back to school picnics and holiday celebrations. The community outreach program provides information, training, and education about domestic violence to schools, corporations, religious institutions, civic groups, and others.
