b) Local Food - In 2011 The Minnesota Project (TMP) harvested over 31,000 lbs. or 5,000 family servings for locally grown pears and apples for local food shelves and kitchens through its 3rd year of the Fruits of the City Program. TMP also expanded its work on improving access to healthy local food in urban neighborhoods by collaborating with others in the pilot of a garden gleaning program. TMP also worked with immigrant and minority produce farmers in developing new markets and contract sales for their produce, beyond farmers markets. We continue the exploratory work in the development of statewide and local policy development in support of Urban Agriculture and micro farming. The Minnesota Project continues to connect farmers to restaurants, chefs, institutions and distributors, while educating and promoting the benefits of local food to broader public audiences.

Activity 3

c) Agriculture - The Minnesota Project works to ensure that fair farm systems reward typical family farmers for growing diverse crops while protecting soil and water resources. This is accomplished by bringing together diverse agriculture and environmental interests in order to bring out policy change that is shaped to reward farmers for farming in ways that conserve natural resources and protect the water supplies, allows for wildlife habitat, and produces healthy food.
