Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The finance committee receives copies and reviews the entire 990; it is also reviewed by the chief operating officer and the ceo. A copy of the public version is sent electronically to each board member.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Requirements are reviewed with all incoming board members, and then annually with full board. If there are conflicts, the board member recuses themselves from the discussion and vote.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Compensation for the ceo is set by the personnel committee of the board. They compare compensation with publically available information for similar positions, either through salary surveys or through review of 990's for other nonprofits. There is a salary grade and range established for this position, as for all positions. Compensation is reviewed annually for all staff. A formal salary administration program is in place (salary ranges, job grades). Market comparisons are done formally on a periodic basis; published market surveys are reviewed annually and ranges adjusted as mhc leadership determines appropriate. Individual compensation is recommended by direct supervisor, coo, and approved by the ceo. The ceo reviews and approves all compensation adjustments for the leadership team. Staff adjustments for all staff are based on job responsibilitiesies, performance and comp analysis. The board personnel committees reviews and approves the annual salary pool, prior to the approval of the full budget by the board.

Earnings will be used annually to honor one or more minnesota historians and/or outstanding work of minnesota history.

PART X, LINE 2:

Mhc has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under the internal revenue code. Charitable contributions by donors to mhc are tax deductible. Mhc is subject to unrelated business income tax on a portion of its conference center rental activities. Mhc believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and accordingly, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. Mhc has significant net operating loss carryforwards from rental activities that began expiring in 2018. It is expected that most or all of the carryforwards will expire without being fully utilized.

IRS990/Desc0THE MISSION OF THE MINNESOTA HUMANITIES CENTER (MHC) IS TO CONNECT OUR PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE BY BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING AND SPARK CHANGE. OUR VISION IS A JUST SOCIETY THAT IS CURIOUS, CONNECTED, AND COMPASSIONATE.MHC COLLABORATES WITH INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES TO BRING TRANSFORMATIONAL HUMANITIES PROGRAMMING INTO THE LIVES OF MINNESOTANS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. USING STORY AS A CATALYST, WE PRODUCE, CREATE, AND SUPPORT PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS THAT EXPLORE A RANGE OF SUBJECTS. FOUNDED IN 1971, MHC IS AN INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT AFFILIATED WITH AND SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES, MINNESOTA GENERAL OPERATING AND LEGACY FUNDING. MHC IS ALSO A GRANT-MAKING ORGANIZATION AND OPERATES A FULL-SERVICE EVENT CENTER IN A HISTORIC BUILDING ON ST. PAUL'S EAST SIDE.DURING FISCAL YEAR 2023, MHC USED OUR FUNDS IN THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM AREAS: EDUCATION: MHC'S EDUCATION TEAM HAS WORKED ON LEVERAGING THE HUMANITIES AS A TOOL TO FOSTER MORE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENTS. FOCUSING ON THE WISDOM, VALUE, AND HISTORIES OF MINNESOTA'S CULTURAL AND WIDELY DIVERSE COMMUNITIES THE EDUCATION TEAM HAS BEEN DOING WORK IN FIVE PRIMARY CATEGORIES: CULTURE CHANGE, THOUGHT LEADERSHIP, DIVERSIFYING STAFF, EXPANDING CURRICULUM, AND ELEVATING YOUTH VOICES. IN FY23 MHC HAS WORKED IN SEVERAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS INCLUDING INVER GROVE HEIGHTS' ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STAFF STORY CIRCLES COHORT, HAWLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS' ABSENT NARRATIVES EDUCATOR WORKSHOP, CLOQUET PUBLIC SCHOOLS' OJIBWE PLACE-BASED WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS, AND GREENWAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS' AMERICAN INDIAN RESOURCES PRESENTATION. THE EDUCATION TEAM ALSO EXPANDED ON SOME EXISTING PARTNERSHIPS INCLUDING WORKING CLOSELY WITH ISD 917 ON SEVERAL INITIATIVES. NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECTS HAVE EMERGED SUCH AS HOW MHC IS USING STORY CIRCLE TO HELP ROCHESTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS BIPOC EMPLOYEES REMEMBER THE VALUE THEY BRING TO THEIR ROLES AND THEIR POWER TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE. MHC HOSTED A STORY CIRCLE: FAMILY STORYTELLING NIGHT AT EDGERTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHERE MHC TRAINED ROSEVILLE STAFF IN STORY CIRCLE APPROACHES TO FACILITATE THE SESSION IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES (KAREN, HMONG, SPANISH, AND ENGLISH). A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS WORKING TO INCREASE ETHNIC STUDIES AND SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTION AS WELL AS DEEPEN INSTRUCTION AROUND LGBTQ+, LATINE, AND EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITIES. AND A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES ALLOWED FOR MHC STAFF AND EDUCATORS FROM MINNESOTA TO GO TO BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA FOR THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE "THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD: HEALING FOR THE EVENTS OF 1963" TO PARTICIPATE IN AN IN-DEPTH, INTERACTIVE FIELD STUDY OF THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES: FY23 MARKS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF LEARNING FROM PLACE: BDOTE, A SIGNATURE PROGRAM OF MHC. SINCE 2013, MHC HAS LED 100 BDOTE TRIPS, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 2,500 PARTICIPANTS. LEARNING FROM PLACE: BDOTE'S ANNIVERSARY HAS PUSHED MHC TO EXPLORE WAYS TO EXPAND THIS GROUNDBREAKING PROGRAM. IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR NON-COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO LEARN ABOUT A COMMUNITY AS WELL AS HOLDING SPACE FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR OWN STORY AND IDENTITY. IN FY23 MHC HAS EXPANDED THESE EXPERIENCES INTO OTHER COMMUNITIES HOSTING NEW OFFERINGS SUCH AS HMONG ST. PAUL, LITTLE AFRICA, AND LGBTQ+ DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS HISTORY. IN JUNE OF 2023, MHC CREATED A GROUNDBREAKING INITIATIVE, "JUNETEENTH: BLACK FREEDOM STRUGGLE". THIS PROJECT SERVED AS A CONTINUATION OF MHC'S PREVIOUS AWARD-WINNING PROGRAM, "HOW CAN WE BREATHE AND "KUMBAYAH THE JUNETEENTH STORY" BY ENCAPSULATING A SERIES OF ACTIVITIES BUILT TO FOSTER HISTORICAL AWARENESS, PROMOTING COMMUNITY COHESION, AND ADVANCING SOCIAL CHANGE. MHC ALSO CONTINUED "KUMBAYAH THE JUNETEENTH STORY" DURING FY23, AND THE PLAY WAS SHOWN IN FIVE CITIES, REACHING 4,000 PEOPLE. THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES TEAM HAS WORKED DURING FY23 TO FURTHER THEIR HEADSCARF STORY CIRCLE INITIATIVE. BEGINNING IN MARCH OF 2023, MHC HOST
