Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1

The executive committee is made up of members appointed by the board. Currently, the officers of the board make up the executive committee. The executive committee oversees the operations and management of rmhc as well as reviews and approves the president/ceo's salary.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

Management works with a tax preparer on a draft of the form 990. The draft is first reviewed by the organization's vice president of finance and any questions or comments are addressed. Next, the vice president of finance sends the draft form 990 to the finance committee one week before the committee meeting. During the meeting, the vice president of finance goes through the form 990 and addresses any comments or questions. All committee members approve the draft and the final draft is sent to all board members for comments prior to filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All ronald mcdonald house board and staff members complete the conflict of interest statement annually. These statements are reviewed by the vice president of finance. If there are any conflicts noted these statements are forwarded to the rmh management committee. If a transaction/relationship is considered to be a conflict, management follows-up with the individual to document the disclosure in more detail. At this point, a file is created with any supporting documents regarding the conflict. The person with the conflict of interest is excluded from the discussion and approval of such transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The president/ceo has a salary review done annually by the rmh executive committee. This committee is made up of members appointed by the board. The committee maintains a matrix of salaries, which is used in determining the president/ceo and staff salaries. This matrix is developed using exteral industry averages. As part of this review process information is solicited from the board and management staff. The vice president of finance is reviewed annually by the president/ceo. Compensation is based on the salary matrix set by the executive committee.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

Board designated funds: the board of directors of rmhc has designated $800,000 of unrestricted net assets as a general endowment fund to support the mission of rmhc. The board of directors has elected to spend a portion of the earnings as needed for operations and to grow the fund as earnings are not needed. Donor designated funds: rmhc endowment consists of approximately twenty-one individual funds established for a variety of purposes. Its endowment consists of donor-restricted endowment funds.

PART X, LINE 2:

Ronald mcdonald house charities, upper midwest is organized as a minnesota nonprofit corporation and has been recognized by the internal revenue service (irs) as exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(a) of the internal revenue code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3), qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under section 170(b)(1)(a)(vi), and has been determined not to be a private foundation under section 509(a)(1). The organization is annually required to file a return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) with the irs. In addition, the organization is subject to income tax on net income that is derived from business activities that are unrelated to its exempt purposes. The organization has determined it is not subject to unrelated business income tax and has not filed an exempt organization business income tax return (form 990-t) with the irs. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken affecting its annual filing requirements, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization would recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits and liabilities in income tax expense if such interest and penalties are incurred.

THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY FOR FAMILIES OF BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS WAS 223 NIGHTS WHILE THE AVERAGE STAY FOR OTHER FAMILIES WAS 68 NIGHTS.FAMILY SERVICES: A VARIETY OF SUPPORTIVE FAMILY SERVICES ARE PROVIDED FOR FAMILIES SUPPORTED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. A LICENSED ALTERNATIVE K-12 SCHOOL IS AVAILABLE FOR SIBLINGS AND CHILDREN WHO ARE PATIENTS WHILE STAYING AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE. OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED ARE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, A SUMMER PROGRAM AND VARIOUS EVENING ACTIVITIES 5 NIGHTS A WEEK.WE COVER THE COST OF ACCOMMODATING THE 48 FAMILIES WHO LIVE AT THE HOUSE EACH DAY.
