Mission

The mission is to help youth in crisis. This is accomplished by providing emergency and extended-stay shelter for children ages 10-17, free counseling for youth and their families, and support programs to keep youth and their families connected to services.

IRS990/Description0SHELTER:SINCE 1970, THE BRIDGE HAS PROVIDED EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR RUNAWAY, HOMELESS, AND ABANDONED YOUTH. 786 UNDUPLICATED YOUTH RECEIVED OVERNIGHT SHELTER AT THE BRIDGE LAST YEAR. 762 STAYED IN THE EMERGENCY SHELTER, RECEIVING MEALS, HOUSING, COUNSELING, PEER-TO-PEER COUNSELING, SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, AND FAMILY ADVOCACY. WITH AN AVERAGE STAY OF 2.8 DAYS, 88% OF THESE CHILDREN EXITED TO A SAFE, STABLE LIVING SITUATION. 74% REUNIFIED WITH FAMILY AND 14% FOUND NON-FAMILY ALTERNATIVES. 20% RETURNED FOR ANOTHER OVERNIGHT VISIT. WHILE THIS INDICATES YOUTH AND FAMILY CONTINUE TO NEED SUPPORT, IT ALSO DEMONSTRATES TRUST IN THE BRIDGE AND A WILLINGNESS TO SEEK OUT ADDITIONAL HELP WHEN NEEDED. OF THOSE ACCESSING OVERNIGHT SHELTER, 31 YOUTH WERE ENROLLED IN THE TRANSITIONS PROGRAM, STAYING AN AVERAGE OF 76 DAYS. TRANSITIONS, FOR 16 AND 17 YEAR OLDS, ASSISTS THOSE WHO NEED MORE TIME TO REUNIFY WITH FAMILY OR TO FIND A STABLE ALTERNATIVE. YOUTH RECEIVE SHELTER, MEALS, AND CASE MANAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATE IN LIFE SKILLS TRAINING. WORKING WITH STAFF, THEY LEARN HOUSEHOLD AND MONEY MANAGEMENT, EXPLORE JOB SKILLS AND PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE IN THEIR LIVES. 92% WERE EMPLOYED AND/OR PURSUING EDUCATION. AT PROGRAM EXIT, 64% WENT TO A SAFE AND STABLE LIVING SITUATION OR ARE LIVING INDEPENDENTLY. COUNSELING:THE BRIDGE PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING AT ALL STAGES OF A CRISIS. 921 COUNSELING SESSIONS WERE CONDUCTED AT THE BRIDGE FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES VIA WALK-IN COUNSELING, FAMILY COUNSELING DURING AND AFTER A YOUTH'S SHELTER STAY, AND BY-APPOINTMENT INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING. IN ADDITION, 407 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN GROUP THERAPY. COUNSELORS ALSO FIELDED 4,082 CALLS ON THE 365/24/7 CRISIS HOTLINE.STAFF AT THE BRIDGE ALSO PROVIDE CASE MANAGEMENT FOR SELECT CLIENTS AFTER THEY HAVE EXITED SHELTER PROGRAMS. THROUGH THE BRIDGE'S INDEPENDENT 365 PROGRAM, 13 YOUTH RECEIVED ONGOING CASE MANAGEMENT WHILE LIVING INDEPENDENTLY. WITH THIS SUPPORT, 92% GAINED EMPLOYMENT AND/OR PURSUED EDUCATION. SUPPORT PROGRAMS: BUILDING CONNECTIONS:THE OUTREACH TEAM PROVIDED 346 HOURS OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH, EDUCATING SERVICE PROVIDERS, SCHOOLS, LIBRARIANS, SOCIAL WORKERS, AND OTHERS ABOUT HOMELESS YOUTH AND SERVICES AT THE BRIDGE. OVER 1000 YOUTH WERE CONTACTED DIRECTLY ABOUT SERVICES. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNS PROVIDED 17,331 HOURS OF SERVICE. IN ADDITION TO REDUCING STAFFING EXPENSES, THE VOLUNTEER AND INTERN PROGRAM TRAINS THE NEXT GENERATION OF SOCIAL AND SERVICE WORKERS.
