Mission

To inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education, and research.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education (see schedule o)mcsmh is integral to the education programs of mayo clinic's college of medicine, providing essential clinical care experiences for residents, students and trainees. As a teaching hosptial, mcsmh provided educational experience to the more than 1,900 residents of the mayo school of graduate medical education in 2012.mcsmh also sponsors several programs to further the hospital's commitment to promoting the highest possible quality of patient care. These include a dietetic internship program, pharmacy residency program, chaplaincy internship program, and a nursing education program. In addition, clinical nursing experience is offered to students through affiliations with augsburg college, minnesota state university at mankato, college of st. Scholastica, rochester community and technical college, luther college, university of minnesota, university of wisconsin-eau claire, viterbo college, winona state university and presentation college. In addition, an administrative internship program is another educational opportunity sponsored by mcsmh. The sonography and cardiovascular invasive specialist programs within the mayo school of health related sciences are also based at mcsmh.
Activity 3
Community activities & services and other (see schedule o): several subsidized community activities and services are offered by the hospital. Community education activities include a cardiovascular outreach class, various nursing and emergency medical services classes for regional healthcare professionals, and a weekly nutrition class open to patients, visitors, and the public. Mcsmh also provides meeting space for alcoholics anonymous, aa courage group, and toastmasters. Mcsmh conducts daily chapel services open to the public, and has a healthy living center for employees and their families. Mcsmh sponsors national hospital week, respect life week, and children and hospitals week.mcsmh has a very active and engaged auxiliary. In 2012, 430 active volunteers provided 45,989 hours of donated time in service to the patients, visitors and staff of mcsmh. The estimated value of the time donated by these hospital auxiliary volunteers was approximately $1,018,000 as valued by the independent sector's average estimated hourly value of such service. Some of the activities of the auxiliary include:the auxiliary provides the "come & see program", a class for first grade students to introduce them in a non-threatening way to the hospital and to being a patient. A pediatric nurse conducts the class and includes all class participants in role-play situations. From admission to discharge, students learn about blood draws, vital signs, a surgical procedure (tonsillectomy), x-rays, and much more. The auxiliary pays for the busing for students from rochester school district #535 as well as the cost of the items for a take-home bag. Auxiliary staff schedules and coordinates these classes. For the 2011-12 school year the program hosted 1,715 first grade students from 78 classrooms from rochester school district #535, rochester catholic schools, rochester central lutheran school and schaeffer academy as well as public schools in the surrounding communities of byron, chatfield and lewiston-altura.92 volunteers staff the hospital gift shop under the direction of a paid supervisor. 10% of the gift shop proceeds are donated to the poverello fund that is used to help needy mcsmh patients pay their hosital bills. The remaining proceeds provide funding for the auxiliary's growth fund and other activities of the auxiliary such as heart & lung pillows and purchase of lifeline units.volunteers provide staffing to assist patients and families in the emergency department, surgical waiting areas, visitors cafeteria, information/welcome desks, pediatric outpatient desk and cast room.volunteers offer hospitality services to patients and family members such as complimentary beverages in the intensive care lounges and the am admissions unit, a picture cart offering patients a choice of framed art for their rooms during their stay, surgical messengers working with nurse communicators to keep families informed on the day of surgery and a coffee cart for family members.volunteers staff the hospital library circulation desk and in 2012 assisted 8,899 library visitors, providing 3,831 books, 3,759 magazines and 9,478 audiovisual items to patients and visitors. The auxiliary also offers book cart services to deliver materials to patients in their hospital room. In 2012, the book cart provided materials to 1,521 patients.volunteers sew stuffed animals that are distributed to pediatric patients in the emergency room, same-day surgery and radiology areas. Other items produced by auxiliary members include craniotomy caps, crutch caddies, wheelchair and bed caddies, baby quilts, knitted caps and booties for nicu patients, toe cozies for orthopedic patients, cloth memory envelopes for bereaved families and prayer shawls. These items are provided to patients at no charge.in 2012, 34 trained volunteers provided over 4,000 hand massages to patients, family members and staff. These volunteers also provided hand massages at mayo clinic's "stress free zone" at the mall of america.a

SOME OF THE TREATMENT AREAS UNIQUE TO MCSMH INCLUDE: NEUROSURGERY (INCLUDING COMPUTER-ASSISTED BRAIN SURGERY AND GAMMA KNIFE TREATMENT); EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT; CARDIAC TREATMENT (INCLUDING HEART AND LUNG TRANSPLANT AND ROBOTIC HEART SURGERY); REHABILITATION UNIT SPECIALIZING IN CARE OF STROKE, SPINAL CORD INJURY AND TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY; A PAIN REHABILITATION CENTER TO TREAT PATIENTS WHO HAVE CHRONIC PAIN; TEN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS WITH 192 ICU BEDS; MAYO EUGENIO LITTA CHILDRENS HOSPITAL (WHICH INCLUDES A NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT); AND THE MAYO PSYCHIATRY AND PSYCHOLOGY TREATMENT CENTER. IN ADDITION, MCSMH HOUSES A NUMBER OF RESEARCH LABORATORIES, INCLUDING UNITS FOR GASTROINTESTINAL, ENDOCRINOLOGY, AND DIABETES RESEARCH AS WELL AS A GENERAL CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER WHICH COORDINATES A WIDE VARIETY OF PATIENT-RELATED RESEARCH.MCSMH HAS 1,265 LICENSED BEDS AND 67 OPERATING AND PROCEDUREAL ROOMS WHERE 29,742 SURGICAL PROCEDURES WERE PERFORMED IN 2012. DURING 2012 39,834 PATIENTS WERE ADMITTED TO MCSMH FOR A TOTAL OF 222,441 PATIENT DAYS AND THERE WERE 12,105 OBSERVATION UNIT STAYS. MCSMH OPERATES ON A NONDISCRIMINATORY BASIS, REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOR, SEX, RELIGION OR NATIONAL ORIGIN. MCSMH PROVIDES CARE TO PERSONS COVERED BY GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO BOTH MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PATIENTS/RESIDENTS AT SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNTS FROM STANDARD FEES. CHARITY CARE IS ALSO PROVIDED FOR PATIENTS THAT ARE FINANCIALLY UNABLE TO PAY FOR SERVICES PROVIDED. IN 2012, THE COST OF CHARITY CARE PROVIDED WAS APPROXIMATELY $7,462,000. THE COST OF UNCOMPENSATED CARE PROVIDED TO LOW INCOME PATIENTS THROUGH MEDICAID WAS APPROXIMATELY $34,170,000. THIS AMOUNT INCLUDES A MEDICAID SURCHARGE OF $8,526,000 AND $9,511,000 PAID TO MNCARE (A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES HEALTH CARE FOR LOW INCOME POPULATIONS).
