Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The purpose of the farmory is to create a model of agricultural innovation that reimagines the use of indoor urban spaces and provides our community with opportunities to cultivate healthy, sustainable livelihoods. By converting an empty former armory building into a 20,000 square foot indoor vertical aquaponics farm, this non-profit inspires a new generation of local students, volunteers and area residents to further their education and seek careers in stem and sustainable agriculture, as well as upskill individuals with challenging life circumstances and support their entry or re-entry to the workforce through apprenticeships and defined work experiences. The farmory's goal is to build a dynamic and diverse food system, where indoor farming plays an integral role in bolstering the physical, environmental and economic health of our communities.

Create an indoor model of agricultural innovation promoting healthy/sustainable livelihoods.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE PURPOSE OF THE FARMORY IS TO CREATE A MODEL OF AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION THAT REIMAGINES THE USE OF INDOOR URBAN SPACES AND PROVIDES OUR COMMUNITY WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO CULTIVATE HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS. THE FARMORY'S GOAL IS TO BUILD A DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE FOOD SYSTEM, WHERE INDOOR FARMING PLAYS AN INTEGRAL ROLE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EDUCATION: OUR EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM BRIDGES ACADEMIC LEARNING FROM K-12 TO POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS WITH REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS IN NUTRITION AND FOOD SCIENCE, SUSTAINABILITY, ECOSYSTEMS, AND THE AGRICULTURE TECHNOLOGY SECTOR AT THE FARMORY. PARTNERSHIPS WITH UW-GREEN BAY, NWTC, WEST DE PERE SCHOOLS, GREEN BAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, ST. NORBERT COLLEGE, AND THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF WISCONSIN ENABLE STUDENTS TO USE THE FARMORY AS A "LIVING CLASSROOM" TO LEARN AND APPLY STEM SUBJECTS TO ALL GRADE LEVELS. IN 2018, OVER 400 PARTICIPANTS LEARNED ABOUT NUTRITION AND SUSTAINABILITY TOPICS IN OUR 15 EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS AND WE HAVE ALSO HOSTED OVER A DOZEN INTERNSHIPS AND CLASS PROJECTS. THE ORGANIZATION GAVE 106 FACILITY TOURS TO LOCAL SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS AND IN TOTAL 48 COMMUNITY EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS WERE GIVEN.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY OUTREACH: DELIVERED AT LEAST TWO PRESENTATIONS EACH MONTH TO SERVICE CLUBS, AREA NONPROFITS, AND OTHER COMMUNITY GROUPS AROUND THE GREATER GREEN BAY AREA. IMPLEMENTED TWELVE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS THAT ADDRESSED TOPICS OF URBAN AGRICULTURE AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING, ATTRACTING OVER 300 PARTICIPANTS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM RECRUITS AREA EXPERTS TO TEACH WORKSHOPS TO COMMUNITY RESIDENTS THAT HELP THEM EAT BETTER AND BECOME MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT. THESE WORKSHOPS PROVIDE BOTH CONTENT AND "HANDS ON" LEARNING IN A VARIETY OF SUBJECTS SUCH AS: GRASS-FINISHED MEAT, HERITAGE GRAINS AND BREAD MAKING, FERMENTED FOODS, BACKYARD AQUAPONICS, AND BEE KEEPING. MOST WORKSHOPS ARE OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE AND HAVE BECOME VERY POPULAR WITH RESIDENTS OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY AND ARE WHERE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CAN INTERACT WITH OUR FARM, EAT THE FOOD WE GROW, AND LEARN ABOUT SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, HEALTH, AND NUTRITION TOPICS. THE FARMORY WAS FEATURED IN OVER 20 NEWS ARTICLES OR INTERVIEWS DURING 2018. WE ALSO COMPLETED A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL MEDIA GIVING TUESDAY CAMPAIGN AND RAISED OVER $30,000 FOR RENOVATIONS. THE FARMORY JOINED THE NEW FOOD FORUM AND BROWN COUNTRY GARDEN COALITION. COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WERE CREATED OR STRENGTHENED WITH NEIGHBORWORKS GREEN BAY, CURATIVE CONNECTIONS, THE VOLUNTEER CENTER, 4-H CLUB, AND UW EXTENSION. 4,947 HOURS WERE CONTRIBUTED BY 90 VOLUNTEERS, LAST YEAR, VALUED AT $122,141.43
