Activity 2

Youth development - responding to a community gap in adequate childcare for working families, in april 2012 the ymca opened a full-time licensed childcare program center. The ymca is the leading provider of childcare in the state of wisconsin. With that in mind, the door county ymca joined a strong network of childcare providers to help our local business partners to serve and maintain a strong workforce. In addition to childcare programming, the ymca offers youth of all ages numerous opportunities to learn and grow in spirit, mind, and body. At the ymca, youth may engage in recreational activities, organized sports, camps, progressive skills and lessons, volunteer endeavors, leadership learning, mentoring, and tutoring. All of these activities are value and asset based so that youth learn life skills, in addition to recreational and developmentally specific skills, which prepare them for success and enthusiastic participation in the communities in which they live. Youth development is also strengthened by the ymca through our family programming and activities. The door county ymca is devoted to providing an environment in which youth can grow and learn and parents can find support and answers for attending to their task of child rearing and development. The door county ymca supports the family unit within our communities by providing resources, programs, equipment, and outlets to assist parents in providing wholesome entertainment, enrichment, and education for raising children. Youth, teenagers, and adult role models participate in soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, flag football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, baseball, biking, tumbling, dance, t-ball, golf, and track & field at the door county ymca. Recreational activities include dodgeball, indoor hockey, "sportwall" programming, "kidzfit" exercise programming, and other fun fitness classes.

Social responsibility - as stated in schedule o, the ymca is fulfilling its mission when it is strengthening the foundations of community and filling gaps that inhibit people from being healthy in spirit, mind, and body. The ymca recognizes that our organization has a strong responsibility to shore up that which may tear down others. As such, the ymca is always willing to sit at the table with stakeholders and leaders who seek to provide resources and assistance to our community. Whether as a convener or a role player, the community can count on the ymca to help solve problems, fill gaps, and provide necessary resources that lead to a better and improved quality of life for all. For example, the door county ymca provides a number of programs and events free to any and all in the community who need what the ymca has to offer. One example of this outreach assistance is the livestrong at the ymca program for cancer survivors. A 12 week support and exercise program that helps any cancer survivor get back on or maintain the path to better health as they battle the varied ravages of cancer. All who participate receive a free ymca membership and customized exercise instruction and caring counsel from ymca trained staff at classes and support group gatherings. We offer a similar free class for those who are dealing with parkinson's disease or parkinson's disease symptoms. Another example of the door county ymca's social outreach is a program that was implemented in the summer of 2012. With the support of a wal-mart grant and a community of coalitions, the ymca offered a summer food service program (sfsp), which is a program of the usda to provide a free meal to any child in the community aged 18 and under who desires it. Our ymca served lunches throughout the summer in three sturgeon bay locationsto all children who came to the sites. We served thousands of lunches and hope to do the same for children in the community next summer.
