Environmental Health Program: In 2012, we educated the public about the health hazards associated with bisphenol A (BPA) and worked with a group of mothers on development and support of a petition to Maines Board of Environmental Protection proposing a phase out of BPA from infant formula, baby and toddler food packaging. With coalition partners, we conducted a study to identify BPA in baby and toddler food packaging and widely disseminated the results. We educated the public about the Kid Safe Products Act intent, accomplishments, statutory deadlines, and requirements. We sent periodic science updates to childhood obesity advocates and organizations, provided education and outreach to cancer groups on chemicals and cancer prevention, and promoted information about toxic flame retardants. We identified several hundred new supporters of safer chemicals and hosted screenings of the film Living Downstream to educate the public about the connections between the use of toxic chemicals and cancer. We held focus groups of concerned citizens to learn about the kinds of consumer resources they would like to keep their families safer. We received an award for Best Paper of the Year from the American Public Health Associations Occupational Health and Safety Section for a detailed account of chemical policy history in the US. We analyzed the Toxic Substance Control Act to identify needed improvements to protect public health and provided strategic policy advice for the Safe Chemicals Act. We organized a Maine Moms grassroots bus trip to Washington, DC to provide training and opportunities for concerned mothers to act. We coordinated the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine, a public health coalition promoting use of safer chemicals in consumer products. We worked on team-building and capacity-building with our partners.
