IRS990/Desc0ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM:IN 2013, WE EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HEALTH HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH TOXIC CHEMICALS. WE WON NEW STATE POLICY BANNING THE SALE OF INFANT FORMULA CONTAINERS AND BABY FOOD JARS CONTAINING BISPHENOL A (BPA) - AN IMPORTANT STEP TOWARDS ELIMINATING BPA FROM OUR FOOD SUPPLY IN MAINE, AND A CATALYST FOR MARKET CHANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. USING MAINE'S KID SAFE PRODUCTS ACT (KSPA), WE ACHIEVED A PHASE-OUT IN INFANT FORMULA AND BABY FOOD JARS THROUGH A CITIZEN-INITIATED RULEMAKING. WE ENGAGED NEW AND SEASONED ACTIVISTS IN THESE EFFORTS THROUGH VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES LIKE PETITION GATHERING, CRAFTING LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, AND SUBMITTING PUBLIC COMMENTS. WE SUPPORTED BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION THAT WOULD HAVE STRENGTHENED KSPA, AND REQUIRED $1 BILLION FOOD COMPANIES TO DISCLOSE THEIR USE OF BPA IN CANNED FOOD. WE SUCCESSFULLY ORGANIZED A MASSIVE GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN OF HEALTH ADVOCATES, MOMS, CONCERNED CITIZENS AND A WORLD-CLASS SCIENCE PANEL IN SUPPORT OF THIS EFFORT, AND COORDINATED AND EFFORT THAT COLLECTED MORE THAN 3,000 POSTCARDS OF SUPPORT. WE ALSO BEGAN RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ON A GROUP OF CHEMICALS CALLED "PHTHALATES". WE CONTINUED TO COORDINATE AND STAFF THE ALLIANCE FOR A CLEAN AND HEALTHY MAINE, AND COORDINATED EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN NEW AND EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN COALITION MEMBERS AND INCREASE CAPACITY. WE PROVIDED LEADERSHIP AND ASSISTANCE TO SAFER CHEMICALS HEALTHY FAMILIES, THE LEADING NATIONAL COALITION WORKING TO REFORM CURRENT NATIONAL CHEMICAL POLICY. OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MIKE BELLIVEAU CONTINUED TO SERVE AS SENIOR ADVISOR ON POLICY DEVELOPMENT, CAMPAIGN STRATEGY AND TACTICS TO THE COALITION. MIKE ALSO HELPED TO COORDINATE STATE AND NATIONAL CHEMICAL POLICY REFORM IN HIS ROLE AS CONSULTANT TO THE SAFER STATES COALITION. WE ENCOURAGED MAINE'S US SENATORS TO BECOME ACTIVE CHAMPIONS OF THE SAFE CHEMICALS ACT OF 2013 AND WE PROVIDED POLICY ANALYSIS FOR OTHER REFORM PROPOSALS. WE ALSO RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED THE "HAZARDOUS HUNDRED" - A LIST OF CHEMICALS OF HIGH CONCERN IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS AS A PRIORITY FOR ACTION BY NATIONAL POLICY AND MARKET CAMPAIGNS. THIS DATA WAS THEN USED TO DESIGN AND LAUNCH "MIND THE STORE," A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TARGETING MAJOR RETAILERS. WE DRAFTED THE DEMAND LETTER TO THE TOP TEN US RETAILERS, ASKING THEM TO ELIMINATE THE HAZARDOUS HUNDRED, A RETAILER ACTION GUIDE, AND MET WITH MAJOR RETAILERS WHILE ALSO PARTICIPATING IN NATIONAL GRASSROOTS EFFORTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY PROGRAM: IN 2013, WE CONTINUED TO PROMOTE THE MANUFACTURE OF SAFER BIOBASED CHEMICALS FROM SUSTAINABLE FOREST PRODUCTS LIKE WOODCHIPS AND AGRICULTURAL WASTE FROM POTATOES, TO REPLACE TOXIC PETROCHEMICALS. WE COORDINATED EFFORTS TO SUPPORT A CLUSTER OF MANUFACTURERS AND RESEARCHERS IN PROMOTING INNOVATIVE, NEW BIOBASED PRODUCTS SUCH AS GREEN PLASTICS AND CHEMICALS, AND RAISED THE NATIONAL PROFILE OF THIS WORK. WE ORGANIZED THE ANNUAL PLANTS TO PRODUCTS CONFERENCE TO SHARE SUCCESS STORIES AND LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE PRODUCTION AND SALES OF BIO-BASED PLASTICS. THE CONFERENCE INCLUDED A TOUR OF A MAINE COMPANY THAT IS POISED TO BE THE FIRST TO TURN WOOD INTO CELLULOSIC SUGARS, WHICH ARE CRITICAL IN MAKING BIOBASED CHEMICALS, PLASTICS AND FUELS. WE CONNECTED RESEARCHERS AND DEVELOPERS WITH POTENTIAL GREEN MANUFACTURERS AND INVESTORS, AND ANALYZED THE SIGNIFICANT MARKET OPPORTUNITIES FOR MAINE COMPANIES TO ADVANCE IN THIS FIELD, WHILE BRINGING SUSTAINABLE, GREEN JOBS TO MAINES ECONOMY.
