| Since 2003, PACE has worked in Piyali Junction India, a community steeped in the depravity of abject poverty. The Piyali Learning Centre (PLC) is a joint venture between PACE and the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Calcutta. PLC's focus is on girls' education but PLC also empowers women and improves the standard of living through out the entire community.Achievements:GIRLS EDUCATION A well-established system of education guided by regulatory agencys academic curriculum is offered at Piyali Learning Centre (PLC) which enables 230+ girls to get an education and prepare them for the official board certified Class 10 and Class 12 exams. Passing of these two class exams are the minimum qualification needed for any kind of future employment for our girls. An extensive system of proper nutrition (two free meals/each school day), immunization, medical care and shoes/clothing/dental hygiene are offered to the girls to assure their health and facilitate their ability to attend school regularly for education.A very well developed After School Enrichment (ASE) program involving arts, music, life skill and physical education are offered at the center to assure the girls proper social and cultural development.WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT - A well establish Adult Literacy Program (ALP) and Vocational Training Program (VTP) have been offered to about 50 60 mothers to allow them to augment their own and their families income by sale of products that they produce school uniforms, cultural program costumes, tote bags, and sari envelopes for card packaging.About 20+ women have completed master tailoring class which has given them the option to qualify for micro-loans to buy machines and do tailoring business from home.About 10+ women are involved with jewelry making program. Much market research is conducted from PACE headquarters on the latest designs for salable jewelry, proper techniques for finish are taught and the products are made and shipped to the US for sale and income generation for participating beneficiaries.COMMUNITY PACE Universal has developed a very successful partnership with the Rotary Club of Calcutta Metropolitan (RCCM) to implement the full gamut of programs that is successfully uplifting a community out of abject poverty while setting up a proto-type model which can be duplicated in other communities, whenever child trafficking and the vagaries of extreme poverty rob people of humanity and a chance at normal human life. Through this partnership PACE and RCCM are offering and have implemented clean water wells, sanitation units, built roads, planted fruit trees, gifted an ambulance, offered adult literacy and vocational training programs, and training in organic gardening.PACE and RCCM working with other benefactors have established SAFE (Sanctuary Abode For Education) to provide housing and a safe haven for very high risk girls and women of the community. SAFE became operational in October of 2015.PACE and RCCM have also been able to offer employment to local fathers and mothers who work at PLC again allowing them to earn a living and uplifting their families out of extreme poverty. With the recent completion of the Multiplex Vocational Service Center it is anticipated that PACE and RCCM annually will be able to offer 200 young adults from the village to receive employable skills training.PACE and RCCM are now offering extensive internship program for visiting young people at PLC. The partnership has rented a Guest House in the city to house these young volunteers who are coming from developed countries as individuals or through formalized university programs to work and learn at the center. They are learning about that kind of poverty and the programs that we are offering to help alleviate it. | $54,624 | $87,535 |
