Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Fasb asc 958-360-20 defines collections as works of art, historical treasures, or similar assets that are: held for exhibition to the public, for educational purposes, or for research in furtherance of public service and not financial gain; protected, cared for, and preserved; and subject to a policy requiring any proceeds from the sale of collection items to be reinvested in other collection items. The collection items may be capitalized in one of three ways: capitalize all collection items, capitalize no collection items, or capitalize all collection items acquired on a prospective basis. The partnership has elected to not capitalize this collection item.

PART III, LINE 4:

Located on a shallow, rocky shoal in lake superior over 40 miles due north of marquette, michigan, the stannard rock lighthouse (collection) is considered the most remote lighthouse in north america. The organization plans to expand great lakes climate research at the lighthouse and involve the great lakes conservation corps in historic renovation projects.

PART X, LINE 2:

The partnership is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and, therefore, has made no provision for federal income taxes in the accompanying financial statements. The partnership files form 990 with the internal revenue service. The partnership believes that its income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the partnership's financial conditions, results of operations, or cash flows.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Fundraising events direct expenses 614.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Fundraising events direct expenses 614.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0OUR MICHIGAN ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (MEAP) ASSISTS LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS WITH HEATING PAYMENTS UP TO $3,000 PER HOUSEHOLD PER CRISIS SEASON AND ALSO PROVIDES ENERGY EFFICIENCY EDUCATION. WE USE A DETAILED APPLICATION FOR THOSE APPLYING FOR MEAP ASSISTANCE, WHICH HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE MICHIGAN PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION (MPSC). THE APPLICANT MAKES AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE ST VINCENT DE PAUL CONFERENCE (FRIENDS IN NEED OFFICE) IN THEIR AREA, COMPLETES THE APPLICATION AND REVIEWS IT WITH A CONFERENCE VOLUNTEER. IF THE APPLICANT QUALIFIES AND PROVIDES ALL OF THE REQUIRED INFORMATION, THE DOCUMENTS ARE FORWARDED TO US AND WE CHECK ALL DOCUMENTATION AND VERIFY THE POVERTY LEVEL OF THE APPLICANT HOUSEHOLD. THE APPLICANT'S INFORMATION IS THEN TYPED INTO A SECURE DATABASE CALLED SAFETYNET, WHICH IS RUN BY THE HEAT AND WARMTH FUND (THAW). WE USE THE DATABASE FOR STORING INFORMATION, FOR REPORTING PURPOSES, AND TO TRACK EACH APPLICANT'S STATUS AND ASSISTANCE TOTAL. WE CALCULATE THE PAYMENT AMOUNTS TO THE VARIOUS UTILITY VENDORS BASED ON RECENT BILLS AND GUIDELINES PROVIDED BY THE STATE. WE THEN ENTER ALL PAYMENT INFORMATION INTO OUR ACCOUNTING SYSTEM AND CUT CHECKS TWO TO THREE TIMES PER WEEK. THE INDIVIDUAL PAYMENTS ARE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE UTILITY VENDORS, WHO APPLY THE PAYMENTS TO THE APPLICANT ACCOUNTS. WE MONITOR THE CHECKS THROUGH BANK ACCOUNT RECONCILIATION AND IF NECESSARY, FOLLOW UP WITH THE VENDOR TO VERIFY THAT PAYMENT WAS RECEIVED WITH SUFFICIENT INFORMATION TO PROCESS. WE KEEP ALL MEAP INFORMATION IN LOCKED AREAS AND SUBMIT INFORMATION TO THE MPSC VIA PASSWORD PROTECTED ENCRYPTED MESSAGES.
