“Collections the centers collections, which are made up of items of artifacts of scientific or historical significance, are held for public exhibition, education and research rather than for financial gain. Collection items acquired through purchase or donation are not capitalized. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets if purchased with unrestricted assets and as decreases in temporarily restricted if purchased with donor-restricted assets. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statement of activities. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected in the statement of activities based on the absence or existence and nature of donor-imposed restrictions. It is impracticable to attempt to assign values to the collections because the nature of the collections make to it difficult to determine an objective basis for valuation.”
