Activity 2

Policy and research:the compact's 8th annual policy summit, "toward what end? The relationship of higher education programs to workforce needs," focused on the content and substance of academic programs; on relationships between higher education and employers; on data on job openings and employment trends; and on policy structures that influence academic planning. Major programmatic initiatives in the policy arena in fy13 included disciplinary "tuning," in which teams of college and university faculty in the fields of psychology and marketing created shared understandings of the knowledge and transferable skills students in their disciplines must demonstrate upon completion of their degrees; the state authorization reciprocity agreement, a voluntary initiative among states related to approval of institutions to deliver distance education courses and programs to individuals living in other states; and an effort called the "higher ed redesign initiative," in which principles and practices from the design fields and related creative industries are applied to the redesign of higher education models, processes, and practices.

Cost savings:the compact's cost savings program has saved the member states:- hardware: $21,036,467- software: $ 1,481,584- services: $ $50,515- master property: $ 10,344,702the compact has developed several cost savings initiatives designed to help colleges and universities in the midwest (and in many cases new england and the west) save money and obtain value added benefits. In the area of health care, the compact established a pharmacy benefit management (pbm) program to provide institutions access to discounts on pharmacy purchases; and a student health collaborative which offers colleges and universities affordable and accessible ppaca compliant health insurance for their students. In the area of risk management, the compact has a property insurance program that provides comprehensive property insurance coverage for higher education institutions at reduced premium rates. The compact also has created numerous technology related contracts that leverage the potential volume of the institutions in its member states to offer reduced costs on technology related purchases. In addition, the compact's cost savings initiatives in many cases can be utilized by city, county and state government as well as nonprofit organizations.
