Mission

THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA ASSOCIATION IS TO ADVANCE MEDICAL RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSES OF AND TREATMENTS FOR SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA, PROMOTE PHYSICIAN AND PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE DISORDER, AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THOSE AFFECTED BY SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA THROUGH SYMPOSIUMS, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND ON-LINE RESOURCES. sPASMODIC DYSPHONIA IS A NEUROLOGICAL VOICE DISORDER THAT INVOLVES "SPASMS" OF THE VOCAL CORDS CAUSING INTERRUPTIONS OF SPEECH AND AFFECTING THE VOICE QUALITY. THE NSDA IS COMPRISED OF PEOPLE WITH sd, HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, VOLUNTEERS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILIES. IT IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION DEDICATED SOLELY TO THE SD COMMUNITY.

The mission of the national spasmodic dysphonia association is to advance medical research into the causes of and treatments for spasmodic dysphonia, promote physician and public awareness of the disorder, and provide support to those affected by spasmodic dysphonia.

IRS990/Desc0OUTREACH-The NSDA continues to raise awareness about spasmodic dysphonia through education, outreach and advocacy allowing for a better understanding and quicker diagnosis of this disorder. The NSDA publishes its annual newsletter, "Our Voice," along with a bimonthly electronic newsletter, "e-Voice" to over 5,000 people affected by SD, healthcare professionals and others interested in learning more about the disorder. NSDA maintains on-line resources through its website (www.dysphonia.org) including a directory of over 600 healthcare professionals that specialize in voice disorders, information on the disorder, treatment, and support options, and event opportunities. NSDA exhibited at medical conferences and advocated for people with SD through the Dystonia Advocacy Network. The 2015 NSDA Symposium was hosted in San Francisco, and the Keynote Speaker was NSDA Honorary Director and creator of the Dilbert cartoon, Scott Adams.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA ASSOCIATION IS TO ADVANCE MEDICAL RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSES OF AND TREATMENTS FOR SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA, PROMOTE PHYSICIAN AND PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE DISORDER, AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THOSE AFFECTED BY SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA THROUGH SYMPOSIUMS, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND ON-LINE RESOURCES. sPASMODIC DYSPHONIA IS A NEUROLOGICAL VOICE DISORDER THAT INVOLVES "SPASMS" OF THE VOCAL CORDS CAUSING INTERRUPTIONS OF SPEECH AND AFFECTING THE VOICE QUALITY. THE NSDA IS COMPRISED OF PEOPLE WITH sd, HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, VOLUNTEERS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILIES. IT IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION DEDICATED SOLELY TO THE SD COMMUNITY.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SUPPORT- Supporting people with spasmodic dysphonia has been part of the NSDA mission since it was founded. There are currently about 80 SD support groups and over 200 Area Contact Persons on our support leadership team. The NSDA provides a wide range of support options to help individuals with SD and their families learn to live more effectively with this disorder. Books, brochures, and DVDs provide resources along with tools aimed at specific issues such as employment, insurance and communications tools. An on-line bulletin board along with social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter expand the reach for support and provide the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss personal experiences and most importantly, connect with others. The NSDA Volunteer Leadership is recognized quarterly in an on-line newsletter, "Voices of Support," and participates in an annual meeting in conjunction with the symposium.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0RESEARCH-THE NSDA STRONGLY COMMITTED TO UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE OF SD AND SUPPORTING RESEARCH to find better treatment and ultimately a cure. It provides opportunities for research funding and maintains a Scientific Advisory Board for consultation on how to further advance research. It is an active member of the Dystonia Coalition, a NIH funded initiative formed to advance clinical research for focal dystonia, including providing funding for Project 3 of the Dystonia Coalition on the Development of the Diagnostic Tool for spasmodic dysphonia. In addition, it provides administrative support for the Global Dystonia Registry and is active in the Dystonia Brain Collective, working with other dystonia organizations to advance the understanding of all forms of dystonia, including spasmodic dysphonia. This year the NSDA funded a research grant entitled, "Laryngeal somatosensory evoked cortical potentials in spasmodic dysphonia-An initial study to elucidate abnormal sensory mechanisms in laryngeal dystonia." In additional, the NSDA started to plan its first Research Workshop to take place in April 2016.
