Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Plan and coordinate public and private development in downtown kalamazoo to assure that the downtown area is able to support retail, commercial, and residential activity in the interest of maintaining the central business district as the core of the community. The exempt purpose of the organization includes lessening the burden of the city of kalamazoo government by providing staffing services for the downtown development authority and operating the parking structures owned and built by the city of kalamazoo for the benefit of the public. The organization exists to create a sense of place for a diverse community by supporting and sponsoring events, activities and public spaces which are fun, safe and welcoming to all with a focus on families, youth and education.

The Process for Determining and Approving Officer Compensation

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15A The DKI Executive Committee circulates an evaluation instrument for input to be used in the President's evaluation. Salary surveys conducted by the INTERNATIONAL DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION (IDA) also are used by the committee to compare with other downtown organization CEO's.

SCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2 THE ORGANIZATON IS TAX-EXEMPT UNDER THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE SECTION 501(C)(3) AND, ACCORDINGLY, NO PROVISION HAS BEEN MADE FOR INCOME TAXES. The Organization applies a more-likely-than-not recognition threshold for all tax uncertainties. Only those tax benefits that have a greater than fifty percent likelihood of being sustained upon examination by the taxing authorities are recognized. Based on its evaluation, the Organization has concluded there are no significant uncertain tax positions requiring recognition in its financial statements.

THE EXEMPT PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION INCLUDES LESSENING THE BURDEN OF THE CITY OF KALAMAZOO GOVERNMENT BY PROVIDING STAFFING SERVICES FOR THE DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY AND OPERATING THE PARKING STRUCTURES OWNED AND BUILT BY THE CITY OF KALAMAZOO FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC. THE ORGANIZATION EXISTS TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE FOR A DIVERSE COMMUNITY BY SUPPORTING AND SPONSORING EVENTS, ACTIVITIES AND PUBLIC SPACES WHICH ARE FUN, SAFE AND WELCOMING TO ALL WITH A FOCUS ON FAMILIES, YOUTH AND EDUCATION.
