Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Trips for Kids delivers transformative youth development programs through our network of 75 chapters across the U.S. and Canada. Our programs promote physical and environmental literacy and remove barriers to active healthy lifestyles for underserved youth. We provide kids with safe and fun after-school programs they trust and where they can excel and engage in a health-enhancing physical activity. We empower our youth to achieve their highest potential by developing meaningful values and critical life skills that will lead them to success.

At the core of our mission is the belief that a childs ability to access activities that improve mental, emotional, social and physical health should not be determined by their race, ethnicity, gender, ability or zip code. With the demonstrated capacity of the bicycle to transform young lives and the historic lack of access to bikes, trails and cycling programs in underserved communities, we are committed to delivering programs that use the universal power of the bike to build healthy bodies, minds and communities.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Since 1988, more than 95% of the 250,000 children served nationwide by Trips for Kids member organizations have been from at-risk communities. Ours has always been a grassroots movement with limited visibility within the traditionally privileged cycling world. Working in partnership with more bicycle industry leaders and national cycling organizations, our ability to reach more kids with more programs and services continues to expand. In 2022, the Trips for Kids National Office served over 30 member organizations across North America providing them with program resources, cycling related equipment, online education platforms and community engagement services. We collected the following annual statistics from these member organizations about the kids they serve by program area.StatisticsRides: 403 / Riders: 4,710 / Earn-a-Bike Workshops: 84 / EAB Students: 607 / Bikes Donated: 7,241# Bikes Recycled: 3,832 / Satisfaction with TFK National Office: 4.4 out of 5. Of the 2,091 kids reported by ethnicity, 70% were non-white. Measure of ImpactThrough research published by The Aspen Institutes Project Play and longitudinal findings from our 30 years working with kids, the intergenerational implications of physical activity from early childhood through adolescence into adulthood is settled science and informs our work. Physically active children are less likely to be obese, smoke, use drugs or practice risky sex leading to pregnancy. They have up to 40% higher test scores and are 5% more likely to go to college. They also have lower levels of depression and self-derogation and higher self-esteem. Long term they have 7-8% higher annual earnings, are more productive at work and have lower healthcare costs.According to a 2020 study by Afterschool Alliance, Out-of-School programs provide significant ROI. A $1 investment returns $3 in youth earning potential, improved school performance and a reduction in crime and juvenile delinquency. Yet today more than 19 million children are unable to enroll in these types of programs. Trips for Kids is working to change that.ConclusionTo propel our movement forward, in 2023 plan we align with a major national organization that shares our mission, is positioned to build on our momentum and is committed to deliver our educational and programming resources to a broader membership. The whole being greater than the sum of its parts, this alignment will enable us to: Increase diversity in the youth cycling community /Broaden membership and geographic coverage / Build communities and connections / Expand programming resources and services.-$172,436
