“The harsens island/st. Clair flats historical societys mission is to collect, protect, preserve and share with the public the unique historical artifacts and information that represents the diverse cultural composition of the people that occupied the area of the st. Clair river delta that is harsens island and the st. Clair flats.”

“During 2019, the historical society museum was open two days a week from may to september and several additional days during the summer for special school and senior citizen visits. In may, we broke ground on a building addition to our museum. Floor plans include additional space to better showcase our artifacts and a room dedicated as a library to house our numerous documents and to be used for research and holding meetings. The addition will also provide space allowing the historical society to hold special events such as our lecture series in our own facility. Despite delays delivering materials due to weight restrictions imposed by the ferry in fall of 2019, we are excited to re-start and complete construction in 2020. We continued to hold several history lectures, and in november held a special event remembering the sinking of the edmund fitzgerald. Our newsletter has been updated and improved, not only providing important updates to our members, but each month during 2019 has showcased the history of families on harsens island in a feature "people of harsens island".”

“During 2018, the historical society museum was open two days a week from may to september and several additional days during the summer for special school and senior citizen visits. In july, we hosted the voyageur's, a 1700's fur trapping re-enactment group that stopped with their 30 foot replica canoe and camped on the museum property for several days. Music and special presentations on the lives of fur trappers were part of this program. In addition, we presented three history lectures and conducted four social hours for members. Our special exhibit for 2018 focused on the genealogy of jacob harsen, with an extensive family tree on display with details available for island families to research their own genealogy and potential roots to jacob harson.”
