The Longfellow Chorus held the seventh-annual Longfellow Choral Festival on March 16 and 17, 2013. This festival presented numerous classical compositions by the African-English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912). The centerpiece of this weekend-long festival was a rare, complete performance of Coleridge-Taylor's four-part cantata, "Scenes From The Song of Hiawatha," based on the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This performance included modern ballet, choreographed for five professional dancers. The soloists for "Hiawatha" were African-American opera singers with international reputations: Angela Brown, soprano; Rodrick Dixon, tenor; and Robert Honeysucker, baritone. The orchestra and chorus were comprised of 90 singers and players, the majority of whom were professional musicians. Special care was taken to recruit an ensemble of players, singers and dancers that represented an ethnically diverse unity. To accomplish this, numerous players and singers were brought to Portland, Maine, for the performances from Boston, Washington, DC, New York City and Pennsylvania. Other Coleridge-Taylor compositions presented during this weekend of performances were his Violin Concerto in G-Minor (with Tai Murray, violin soloist), the Bamboula Rhapsodic Dance for orchestra, Keep Me From Sinking Down for violin and orchestra, several shorter concerted works, and spirituals from the Songbook of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Additionally, we premiered the film "Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and His Music in America, 1900-1912," a film produced by The Longfellow Chorus, at the Nickelodeon Theater in Portland. We showed this film twice and received enthusiastic reviews from the members of the theater audience.$0$32,120
The Longfellow Chorus sponsored the second-annual Longfellow February Frostbite Road Race in Portland, Maine, on February 17, 2013. The event celebrates the birthday of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with the racers running past his childhood home on Congress St. in Portland. Nearly 80 runners registered and participated in the race, which was held despite the frigid temperature and blowing snow. The event was a great success and not only benefitted, but helped draw attention to the Longfellow Choral Festival, scheduled for the following March 16/17.$0$1,000
We achieved success with undergoing research for future projects.$0$1,000
The leadership of The Longfellow Chorus took a break from program services in tax year 2013 to undergo a period of extensive research, study and planning for future projects, and to begin to assemble a book-length narrative about the unique accomplishments of The Longfellow Chorus since its founding in 2007. A partial, though major, result of this research resulted in a program during the (next) 2014 tax year called "Music from The Gilded Age: Harvard's Boston Theatre Orchestra Collection." Details about this historic program will be discussed in next year's 990.$0$1,000
The organization produced a documentary film titled "Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and His Music in America, 1900-1912. This documentary is 2 hours in length and deals with the influence on American music and society by the African-English classical music composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912). This composer is relevant to the mission of The Longfellow Chorus because of his cantata based on Longfellow's epic poem, "Scenes From The Song of Hiawatha."$0$0
The Longfellow Chorus held it's annual program on March 21, 2015, in John Ford Theatre at Portland High School, "Music from The Gilded Age: The Boston Theatre Collection, 1867-1877." The program consisted of 18 manuscript theatre orchestra scores from Globe Theatre and Boston Theatre in Boston, which are archived at Houghton Library, Harvard University. Longfellow Chorus Artistic Director Charles Kaufmann transcribed these manuscript theatre orchestra scores, and presented them in this concert with The Longfellow Chorus Orchestra and two soprano soloists. The purpose of this concert was research for a production in April 2016 of the 1874 Victorian American Musical Comedy, "Evangeline, or The Belle of Acadia." By transcribing and performing these theatre orchestra scores, Mr. Kaufmann studied how to orchestrate piano music in the style of an 1870s American theatre music director. This was a necessary skill in planning and presenting the 2016 Evangeline concert, since none of the original orchestra music from Evangeline has survived except a short instrumental medley by Victorian-American composer George Wiegand -- which was in the March 21, 2105 program -- and presentation of Evangeline would require Mr. Kaufmann to orchestrate the 1877 Evangeline piano vocal score. (Which he did for the successful April 2016 program -- but that's next year's 990!) The Longfellow Chorus also held its annual fundraising road race, "The Longfellow Frostbite Road Race" on Congress St. in Portland, Maine, on February 8, 2015.$0$0

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Since October 1, 2015, Charles Kaufmann has been overwhelmingly busy in preparing the April 2 & 3, 2016, production by The Longfellow Chorus of the revival of the Victorian-American musical comedy, "Evangeline, or The Belle of Acadia." This was a huge production, with 60 professional cast members, which required creating over 1,000 pages of sheet music orchestrations for the orchestra and compiling a 17,000 word libretto from primary sources. Every aspect, including auditioning, hiring, renting of space, rehearsing and performing fell on Mr. Kaufmann's shoulders. With the successful completion of the April 2 & 3, 2016, revival of Evangeline by The Longfellow Chorus and Orchestra, Mr. Kaufmann was immediately able to direct his attention to the fiscal year 2014-2015 990.
