Mission
Healthconnect one (hc one) is the national leader in advancing equitable, community-based, peer-to-peer support for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Hc one realizes its mission by promoting health equity. We work to eliminate maternal and child health inequities because we know that when our children are healthy and thriving, our communities are healthy and thriving. Hc one partners with communities of color and low-income communities across the country to ensure support for mothers and their babies in every part of their lives. Our vision is to see every baby, mother and family thrive in a healthy community.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- The health resources and service administration (hrsa) doula program provides training and technical assistance and cross-sited evaluation to 6 federally funded community-based doula agencies across the country as the hrsa-funded community-based doula leadership institute. From 2008-2013 healthconnect one is named the hrsa community-based doula leadership institute, providing replication services to a cohort of six sites in 2008-2010 and a new cohort of six sites from 2010-2013. In addition to the replication services, hc one also convenes the national community-based doula leadership institute advisory board made up of key experts in maternal and child health and providers of community-based doula services. The board focuses on three areas: 1)public education to promote the use of the community-based doula model, 2) advocacy to encourage public/private partnerships to advance fiscal sustainability of community-based doula programs, and 3) evaluation of outcomes from the network of community-based doula sites.
- Activity 3
- Healthconnect one's community-based doula program replicates the community-based doula program in 16 states across the country, with interest from over 60 communities across the globe. Community-based doula programs improve infant health, strengthen families, and establish supports to ensure ongoing family success. Hc one replicates the community-based doula program, provides ongoing support and technical assistance, and evaluates the model. Currently, hc one is advising a total of 109 communities in 29 states, washington, dc and internationally, in various stages of preparation or replication. The organization also replicates breastfeeding peer counselor programs across the country, and collaborates on the expansion of the community health worker role. In addition to replication, hc one coordinates a national advocacy network of community-based doula, breastfeeding peer counselor and community health worker programs. The advocacy work of the network contributed to the development of the first federal funding stream for community based doula programs, beginning in september 2008 and renewed in september 2010.
