Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The organization bridges the gap for chicago southland residents in temporary crisis by providing food, shelter, clothing and referrals, empowering them to return to self-sufficiency. Its mission is essentially twofold. First, to provide goods and services directly to the poor and needy. Secondly, the organization acts as conduit in the broader network of social services.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Volunteers make food pickups and stock shelves in the food pantry or sort and price clothing in the resale shop. Others bring technical expertise or career experience to the office operation. Another group of volunteers pitches in only at fundraising times, running some events and bringing in donations from local residents.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The organization operates a food pantry five days a week located on its premises, providing a week's worth of groceries and personal care products to residents in need from 26 chicago south suburban communities. The staff is assisted by a large volunteer force, which donated 30,000 hours of service the year ended june 30, 2020. In that same time period, an average of 4,200 persons per month received assistance from the food pantry. Families received canned and boxed food, bread, meat or poultry or fish as available and produce (in season). Additional assistance is provided during the thanksgiving and christmas seasons in the form of complete holiday meals. Further assistance is provided during the summer months when school is out of session and children need breakfast and lunch in the home.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

The organization provides life's necessities to families and individuals experiencing a crisis. Services include the previously mentioned programs and emergency assistance, special programs and ongoing supportive services, and case management. Additionally, the organization has provided children with backpacks and supplies for school and presents at christmas.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Fasb accounting standards codification (asc) 740 income taxes (asc 740) provides that a tax benfit from an uncertain tax position may be recognized when it is more likely than not that the position will be sustained upon examination, including resolutions of any related appeals or litigation processes, based merits. Income positions must be a more likely than not that the recognition threshold at the effective date is to be recognized upon the adoption of asc 740 and its subsequent periods. The interpretation provides guidance on measurement, derecognition, classification, interest and penalites, accounting in interim periods, disclosure and transition. The organization adopted asc 740 and it had no impact on its financial position or results of operations. The only tax years subject to examination by major tax jurisdictions are those within the statutory limits.
