Mission

To provide programs and services designed to strengthen and enhance the health and education of native people.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Peer and health education: address issues relevant to adolescents and aids through the following five areas:* pow-wow leadership program teachs women to be hiv peer educators. The participants are trained in hiv and are women who attend pow-wows they in turn share risk reduction measures and encourage women in their social network to get an hiv test. Forty women were trained and completed the program during 7/1/2011 to 6/30/2012, with 356 risk reduction conversations documented. Participants were tested during the pol training and at reunion events, and these participants were asked to bring in people to get tested, and these numbers are included under cdc's ctr totals.* community promise is a program targeted to american indians in alcohol and drug treatment centers in north western minnesota. The individuals create role model stories which are printed on cards and distributed by peer educators; encouraging risk reduction measures and promoting hiv rapid testing. 232 people participated in this program between 7/1/11 to 6/30/12, 90 people reached by peer advocates with role model stories. Participants were tested during the community promise training and at community testing events, and these participants were asked to bring in people to get tested and all of these numbers are included under cdc's ctr totals.* counseling and testing for hiv is a program that is offered at reservations throughout minnesota, and wisconsin to people at risk for hiv. Each person is provided with a rapid hiv test and offered incentives and referrals for other services. 1,548 people were tested last year across all agency programs. Of these, six people tested positive for hiv and were linked to care. Testing was conducted in over two-dozen sites across the state of minnesota.* between 7/1/2011 and 6/30/2012, the ehdi honor project trained 77 peer educators, who reached a total of 246 women who attended safer snagging parties. 327 people were tested for hiv through this program during the fy 2012, including 85 who were tested at reunions, and training events for honor project participants. Of these, two persons tested positive. * the chat program strives for improvement in the hiv/aids health outcomes of at-risk minority youth, reductions in health disparities that place a greater burden or preventable disease/disability and premature death on at-risk minority youth, and/or improved systems approaches to addressing these problems. Between 7/1/2011 and 6/30/2012, there were 62 youth who participated in the chat program. 104 people, mostly youth, were tested under funding from the chat program. The chat program and its participants reached more than 7,300 people during fy 2012, through postings of videos on youtube, messages posted on facebook, and through educational events sponsored by the program. * mdh program: during the period from 7/1/2012 to 12/31/2012, the program was targeted to reaching high risk heterosexual native people. The program was retasked as of 1/1/2012 to target two spirit/msm population. Between 1/1/2012 and 6/30/2012, there was one group educational program event, to which 27 people attended, and 14 were tested. * omh/mytep: this program started 9/1/2011, and between 9/1/2011 and 6/30/2012, the program adapted an existing curriculum to work with adolescents and young adults both as prevention and cessation program. The program regrouped the statewide collaborative gropu, mnact, and enlisted partners to pilot the curriculum. A needs assessment was conducted in three communities. By the end of 6/30/2012, one pilot group was run, with nine participants. Approximately 3,000 individuals were served in 2012 at health fairs, pow-wows, and community education sessions.
Activity 3
Mayanidoowahdak odena housing: 14-unit permanent housing program for families living with hiv operated as leasehold cooperative. The housing project incorporates aspects of tribal/community living allowing residents to share resources, tasks, and household chores to maximize their energy and live their lives with dignity.
