Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The Corporation is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Corporation evaluates tax positions taken in the course of preparing the Corporation's tax returns to determine whether tax positions are more likely than not of being sustained by the applicable tax authority. Tax benefits of positions not deemed to meet the more likely than not threshold would be recorded as a tax expense in the current year. For the years ended June 30, 2016 and 2015, the Corporation has not identified any uncertain tax positions, and no income tax expense has been recorded in the statements of activities and changes in net surplus (deficit). Open tax years under the applicable statutory limitations for federal returns of the Corporation include tax years ended June 30 2013 through June 30, 2015.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Corporation is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt0This grant funds the Chicago Bulls Community Assist Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund. The Chicago Bulls Community Assist Fund, established in 2009, is supported with major funding by Chicago Bulls Charities, which is then matched 50% by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Contributing to the McCormick Foundation allows Chicago Bulls Charities to maximize its giving potential, allowing it to make a bigger impact on those in need. In 2015, the Chicago Bulls Community Assist Fund awarded grants to ten (10) organizations that offer youth education and youth health and wellness programing, including After School Matters, After-School All-Stars, Chicago Parks Foundation, Embarc Chicago, La Rabida Children's Hospital and Research Center, Marwen, Mercey Home, Posse Chicago, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana, and Youth Guidance.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt1This grant supports the Rainbow EXCEL Basketball League (REBL). REBL is an integral component of the comprehensive PUSH for Excellence sports program for youth. The initiative provides at-risk and underserved youth with a positive alternative to violence.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt2This grant supports ASM's Sports Referee Training Program in North Lawndale on Chicago's west side. After School Matters is a nonprofit organization providing after school programming annually to 15,000 students throughout Chicago. The program provides preparation for 60 teens annually to become confident and proficient Illinois High School Association registered basketball officials.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt3Community Center and Recreational Facility
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt4The donation to Youth Guidance will support Becoming A Man (B.A.M.) program implementation at Wells Community Academy in Chicago's West Town community. The sponsorship will enable B.A.M. to engage 50 young men in grades 9-12 who are at increased risk of school dropout or involvement in violent behavior. These young men participate in weekly group counseling sessions that guide them to learn, practice and internalize key social-emotional competencies that enable them to establish healthy relationships, make responsible decisions, and become positive members of their school, family and community.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt5This grant funds Bright Pink's Bright Pink University: Bulls Edition program. The program is for targeted community clinic-based version of Women's Health Provider Education Initiative, which educates health care providers on how to identify and manage young patients' risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Bright Pink will specifically aim to bring the program to clinics providing care for medically underserved populations.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt6This grant funds YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. This program is for YMCA's Urban Warriors, which provides direct services to justice-system-involved youth and at-risk-of-involvement youth by pairing them with military combat veterans to share common life experiences. The program fosters youth resiliency in an effort to reduce incidences of violence. The grant continues to support an Urban Warriors Alumni Support Pilot Project to provide additional support to Urban Warriors program alumni youth, after the completion of the 16-week program cohort.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt7This grant supports the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, a school-based counseling, violence prevention and education enrichment program for at-risk male youth between 7th and 12th grades in Chicago Public Schools.
IRS990ScheduleI/RecipientTable/PurposeOfGrantTxt8This grant provides general support of the Club's program reaching underserved community members and their family and friends impacted by cancer. Gilda's Club Chicago strengthens communities' bonds by creating a supportive network for people with cancer.
