The data to support the form 990 is prepared by management and a copy of the return is then reviewed by the organization's independent accountant. Once the review is complete, management reviews the filing to ensure the completeness and accuracy. Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 Intended uses of endowment funds

The theater's endowment consists of funds designated by the governing board to function as endowment. Net assets associated with the fund are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions. The theater will classify as permanently restricted net assets (a) the original value of any gifts donated to a permanent endowment, (b) the original value of any subsequent gifts to a permanent endowment, and (c) accumulations to the permanent endowment made in accordance with the direction of the applicable donor gift instrument at the time the accumulation is added to the fund. The remaining portion of any donor-restricted endowment fund that is not classified as permanently restricted net assets will be classified as temporarily restricted net assets until those amounts are appropriated for expenditure by the theater in a manner consistent with the standard of prudence prescribed by upmifa.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 FIN 48 (ASC 740) footnote

Chicago shakespeare theater is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is classified as a public charity by the internal revenue service. It is also exempt from state income tax. Certain revenues of the theater are unrelated business income; however, the associated expenses exceeded those revenues during the years ended june 30, 2024 and 2023. Accordingly, no unrelated business income tax expense has been recognized. The theater follows the accounting standards for contingencies in evaluating uncertain tax positions. The guidance prescribes recognition threshold principles for the financial statement recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return that are not certain to be realized. No liability has been recognized by the theater for uncertain tax positions as of june 30, 2023 and 2022. The theater's tax returns are subject to review and examination by federal and state authorities.

IRS990/Desc0A regional Tony Award recipient, Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) creates and advances art to reveal the diversity, power, and mystery of the human experience. Our bold, visionary productions and programs sit at the cultural crossroads of our great city, giving voice to stories that bridge countries, cultures, communities, and generations. CST leadership, board and staff are committed to bringing a range of work from Shakespeare to new plays, international productions, and works that introduce new voices to our stages. Founded in 1986 and located on Chicago's iconic Navy Pier since 1999, CST's campus features the Jentes Family Courtyard Theater, The Yard, and the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Theater Upstairs. The current season includes nearly 400 performances with more than 173,000 people expected to visit CST. CST is deeply engaged in our communities, making the arts accessible for Chicagoans of all ages and backgrounds. Through our Team Shakespeare education programs, we work with teachers and students to build literacy skills, particularly those who are in underfunded public schools that lack access to arts education. Our Shakes in the City program brings free, live performances to neighborhoods with less access to the arts. Between these two programs, we reach approximately 300 schools and 15,000 teachers and students annually and engage 12,000+ audience members in neighborhoods throughout our city. CST's choice of productions and how we present programming is purposeful to represent diverse voices and experiences. We work to ensure that CST is accessible to all and that those who have been underrepresented see themselves on our stages.
