Activity 2

Early childhood project with dcfs the illinois department of children and family services (dcfs) contracts with erikson to manage its early childhood unit. Alumna andria goss directs 19 early childhood specialists based at erikson who work statewide to determine what services are needed to address the developmental concerns of children birth through five who are in the care of or who are being closely monitored by dcfs. Through this project, erikson administers developmental screenings to children ages birth through three entering the foster care system in cook county and coordinates assessments statewide. In fiscal year 2011, the program administered 1,333 screenings; participated in 199 high risk case staffings and made 407 referrals for early intervention and/or infant mental health programs.

Activity 3

The herr research center for children and social policy informs, guides, and supports effective early childhood policy in illinois and across the u.s. Through its research and outreach activities, the center brings together perspectives from policy and research to promote the well-being of children from birth to age 8 and their families. Our researchers design and conduct original research, evaluations & analysis. We then channel this knowledge to government officials, program administrators, advocates, foundation officers and other participants in the policy process to improve the overall effectiveness of programs and policies for young children & families. Fiscal year 2011 projects included an evaluation of illinois's early childhood block grant, examination of policies and practices for serving pre-kindergarten english language learners in chicago public schools, the illinois kindergarten readiness assessment planning initiative, and the family-provider relationship quality measurement project.
