Form 990, Part I, Line 1 Organization'S Mission

Simon youth foundation fosters and improves education opportunities, career development and life skills to transform the lives of students on the verge of dropping out of high school through focused programs and initiatives with our public school and post-secondary education partners. To deliver on its mission, simon youth foundation has developed two major initiatives: simon youth academies and the simon youth scholarship program. Simon youth academies, often located inside simon malls, are non-traditional schools that provide students at risk of dropping out of high school, and the districts that support them, with the personalized support they need to earn their diplomas. Academy students receive job and life-skills training, individualized instruction and support, and are able to set the pace of their education. As each academy operates in partnership between syf and on or more local public school districts, students earn their high school diploma from their local public school district, and teachers received tailored professional development beyond what the school district provides. Since 1999, simon youth academies have maintained a 90 percent high school graduation rate, helping thousands of students earn their high school diplomas.

IRS990/Desc0SIMON YOUTH ACADEMIES ARE PUBLIC ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS LOCATED IN SIMON PROPERTY GROUP MALLS, AND STAND-ALONE SITES. THE ACADEMIES SERVE STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING IN TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS, OFTEN DUE TO CHALLENGING LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES SUCH AS PARENTING, HOMELESSNESS, OR ILLNESS. BY WORKING WITH LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS, SYF IS ABLE TO REACH THESE STUDENTS BEFORE THEY DROP OUT, AND THROUGH THE ACADEMY NETWORK, OFFER STUDENTS THE SAME EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THEY WOULD RECEIVE IN A TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, BUT IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OF AT-RISK STUDENTS. WITH SMALL CLASS SIZES, FLEXIBLE HOURS, SELF-PACED CURRICULUM, AND A FAMILY-LIKE ATMOSPHERE THE ACADEMIES PROVIDE A UNIQUE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT HAS PROVEN TO BE A SUCCESSFUL MODEL. IN ORDER TO GRADUATE FROM AN ACADEMY, STUDENTS MUST MEET ALL STATE AND NATIONAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. WHEN THEY GRADUATE, ACADEMY STUDENTS EARN THEIR DIPLOMAS FROM THEIR REFERRING HIGH SCHOOLS.
