Additional Explanations

Part III, line 4A (continued)

Soarin Hawk has 16 education birds that have been rescued but cannot be returned to the wild because of permanent injuries that would prevent them from hunting. During the year, another 16 raptors were rescued and rehabilitated but could not be released because of their injuries, and these were transferred to zoos and wildlife centers around the country. This is almost double the number of birds sent annually to other facilities. Bird releases are usually done by volunteers who often make videos that are shown on the Soarin Hawk website. Sometimes releases are public events, such as in November 2018, when a juvenile bald eagle that had been with Soarin Hawk for two years was released at Salamonie Reservoir in Huntington County. The eagle had been found in 2016 with a broken leg and feathers that had been chewed so badly by mites that it was unable to fly. Soarin Hawk replaced the damaged feathers with feathers from an eagle carcass and rehabilitated the bird. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which manages Salamonie, estimated that 500-800 people attended the release event. In May, Soarin Hawk broke ground in Huntertown for its first permanent home. This capped a two-year search for a new location. Soarin Hawk volunteers and friends are building the new facility, which will include new, modern recovery enclosures and habitats that are designed to provide a natural setting for the raptors, while minimizing maintenance; an aviary that will enable our volunteers to exercise multiple birds in all weather conditions, which results in the return of birds-of-prey to their natural environment much quicker; and an operations building that will provide climate-controlled space for triage and treatment, a preparation area for raptors food, and serve as a base for Soarin' Hawk's volunteers. The site also will include restoring a portion of the acreage to much needed Prairie, Pollinator and Riparian habitats. A major contributor was Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), which donated $100,000 to the project. I&M and Soarin Hawk have worked together in wildlife conservation since 1993 with the introduction of peregrine falcons to Fort Wayne and the placing of a nesting box on top of Indiana Michigan Power Center. Soarin Hawk volunteers assist the Indiana Department of Natural Resources with banding falcon chicks several weeks after they hatch. The tradition continued in the spring of 2019, with the banding of four newborns. Another milestone was the purchase of a new (low-mileage, used) van to replace the existing van, which was becoming a challenge to maintain and operate safely. The van is used to transport birds and their volunteer handlers to educational presentations.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Generate revenue for facility maintenance and operations.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Soarin' Hawk is exempt from federal income tax under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction. Soarin' Hawk has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under the provisions of Section 509(a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code. Soarin' Hawk is also exempt from state income taxes. Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require management to evaluate tax positions taken and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken an uncertail position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by the taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken and has concluded that as of June 30, 2019, there are not uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. The organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. Management believes the organization is no longer subject to examination by taxing authorities for years before June 30, 2016.

IRS990/Desc0Rehabilitation Soarin Hawk rescued 248 raptors, including 104 Red-tail hawks. The number of hawks is up 25% from the previous year, which seems to indicate that Red-tails aresuccessfully breeding and repopulating in our region. Among the other rescued raptors(hawks, owls, kestrels, and eagles) were two infrequently found species, a Short-eared owl and a Sharp-shinned hawk. Please see Schedule O for further information.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Generate revenue for facility maintenance and operations.
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Soarin' Hawk is exempt from federal income tax under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Soarin Hawk has 16 education birds that have been rescued but cannot be returned to the wild because of permanent injuries that would prevent them from hunting.
